Free Christmas eBook short read by Jan Scarbrough

Several years ago, I wrote a short Christmas novella called Hank. This guy was a recurring character in my Dawsons of Montana series, but I needed him for the hero of my next series Ghost Mountain Ranch.

Now until December 30, 2024, you can grab a copy of this Christmas short read from BookFunnel. Just click this link: https://BookHip.com/SCLSPMA

Blurb

Hank brings two romantic series together: The Dawsons of Montana and Ghost Mountain Ranch!

Christmastime at the Six Buckles Guest Ranch. Hank, the Dawson’s trusted wrangler, nurses a broken heart after Liz’s marriage to Chaz. Ashleigh, Chaz’s daughter, is new to ranch life. Can she survive the results of her bad judgement and make a home with her father’s new in-laws?

On Christmas Eve, Hank accepts the job of ranch foreman over the mountains in the Gallatin Canyon. But something dark is happening at the Ghost Mountain Ranch, where the past is reaching out in dangerous ways to haunt the living.

Chapter One

 Six Buckles Guest Ranch

December 2018

Hank Slade rested a forearm on his saddle horn and leaned against it. He peered through the ears of his horse across the valley shrouded in a mantle of snow that stretched out below him. Sagebrush, still smelling pungent and sweet despite the weather, poked through the otherwise unbroken, white landscape. Warmer air from the creek-fed lake generated a ghostly haze in the valley so that the ranch cabins, lodge, and outbuildings appeared cloaked, as if hiding from the world.

Just like Hank wanted to do—hide—or, better yet, run away.

That morning, after plowing the snow from the gravel road to the county highway, he’d ridden up the cleared road behind the lodge on his favorite horse simply to get away. He was a cowboy and wrangler, a stock man who had tended the Dawson cattle and then dude ranch horses for almost twenty-five years. Trouble was, he had nowhere else to go. No real place of his own. No living family. The ranch was his only home and the Dawsons his only family ever since the patriarch Jim Dawson had given him a job when he was thirty and fresh out of the army.

The first Mrs. Dawson had been alive then. Bonnie was the mother of the oldest child Ben. She’d embodied everything a good wife and mother should be, but, as in many things beautiful and perfect, death took her early, throwing the ranch—its real family and extended family—into a tailspin of grief and despair.

But it wasn’t long before Liz came into everyone’s lives. Poor Jim had not known what had hit him, falling hard for a divorced mother with baggage—a ten-year-old son named Brody Caldera. Jim had been riddled with guilt at first, and probably for years after their wedding. Ben had resented a new stepmother, particularly one as young and beautiful as Liz, so soon after his mother’s death. But things have a way of happening for a reason. Baby Mercer was the unexpected cause of a happy marriage that lasted until Jim’s untimely death from a riding accident almost two years earlier.

But if things happen for a reason, why do bad things happen to good people?

That was a question Hank could not answer. He was merely a wrangler, not a philosopher or theologian. He dealt with the everyday care of living creatures. He handled routine. Day in and day out, he fed and watered stock, tended hooves and fresh cuts, brushed manes and tails, cleaned and fixed saddles and bridles, mucked stalls, and in the summer saddled horses for city dudes and guided them into the mountains so they could enjoy the beauty of Montana.

His life was simple. His only pleasure, his guitar and a few songs around the summer campfire. He enjoyed the accolades of the ranch guests. He enjoyed helping them mount a steady quarter horse and laughed with them when they dismounted, sore from using muscles never exercised when sitting behind a computer screen. And he loved the Dawsons—from watching the older children grow, to teaching Mercer to ride and rope, to showing Livy—Brody and Stef’s daughter—how to care for her new pony. He’d lived through the tragedy of Bonnie’s and then Jim’s deaths. The Dawsons’ happiness was his happiness. Their sadness, his.

He just didn’t know how he could live through Liz’s remarriage.

KEEPING PROSPERITY ALIVE By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

Mining has always been a dangerous occupation, but for Western Pioneers life presented so many dangers that one more hardly seemed relevant if it meant prosperity.  Gold and silver lured prospectors West, after which they discovered the value of copper, lead and zinc.  Boom towns flourished and fell as the mines prospered or petered out.

Trying to prevent such an occurrence and foster the longevity and prosperity of Bullet is top-of-mind for my hero Brody, the senior Mason brother in the series Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.  Unfortunately, Brody made a death bed promise to his dying uncle to keep the presence of copper on their ranch a secret.  But some things, like valuable minerals, can only stay buried for so long.  Especially as the demand for copper grew in the late 19th century with advancements in the electrical and telecommunication age.

This is how I picture the crew of miners who arrive in Bullet to work the mine.

For a limited few days, you can download BRODY'S BRIDE for Free from Amazon.

Meanwhile, I am super excited for everyone to meet Shane and Lacey from the Proxy Brides series.  A BRIDE FOR SHANE is brand new today.

Tuesday Teaser:

“I’m not afraid of dying,” Shane told Jones, the smartly-dressed lawyer who had been a frequent visitor to his jail cell lately.

“Only a foolish man would die for something he didn’t do,” Jones said.  “And I don’t consider you a foolish man.”

  “Just unlucky,” Shane muttered.

“Whoever stole those horses deserves to be the one staring down the hangman’s noose, not you.  The true thief will keep right on thieving, and get away with it because you took the fall.”

“I don’t need to be rehabilitated,” Shane said stubbornly.  “I’ve got no truck with a bunch of stuffy church ladies going all preachy on me and minding my business.”

“Taking on a wife will help prove to society that you’ve reformed,” the lawyer said.

  Shane half-snorted, half-laughed.  “Who’d marry me?”

“Apparently, Lacey Collins has agreed to that honor,” Jones said drily.

Shane straightened.  “Lacey Collins!  Why didn’t you say so in the first place?”

  “So, you agree?”

“Heck, no.”  He tamped down the image of Lacey that drifted into the recesses of his memory.  A cascade of wavy dark auburn hair and a temper to match.  Beautiful, willful, and used to getting what she wanted.  As his best friend’s twin sister, Lacey was out of his league and completely off limits!

“She’s agreed to save your sorry hide, allowing me time to find the real perpetrator and get you pardoned,” Jones continued.  “As long as the union isn’t consummated, it can be annulled later.”  The man gave him a closer look.  “Judging by your reaction, that doesn’t seem like it should be an issue.”

Shane eyed him straight back.  Clearly, the lawyer had never met Lacey.

WHAT DO SOURDOUGH AND WRITING HAVE IN COMMON? By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

A few months ago, it seemed like the entire world was baking their own bread and I couldn’t find a package of yeast in the stores for love or money.  My creative son learned to make his own sourdough starter and has been baking wonderful bread with it ever since.  Recently, he gave me my own container of the magic stuff so I, too, could bake bread.  Not a bad first effort, I thought.

Confession!  I think I killed the sourdough.  I put it in the fridge and forgot to feed it.

Which is when I realized the care of feeding of sourdough is very much like the process of writing a book.  The author has the starter, or the kernel of an idea.  We feed it.  We coddle it.  We play with it, knead it, and form it into a loaf.  We feed it some more.  And much like that beautiful, golden, delicious-smelling loaf of bread we eventually lift from the oven, one day we have an entire book.  Or at least enough pages we can painstakingly revise and eventually shape into a book.

We all know it’s been a tough year.  Some writers talk about burn out and Covid fatigue, while others credit the writing for keeping them going and giving them positive to focus on every day.

Personally, I find inspiration in my characters.  Those pioneer women living on the frontier, where months might go by before they see a visitor.  They can’t afford to let their sourdough die.  They can’t loll around watching Hallmark movies and eating chocolate.  They have work to do in order to survive.  And so do I.  I have readers waiting for my next book in my new series.  I have brides waiting to get married and babies waiting to be born.  Towns to create and outbacks to settle.  And so I get busy.  I feed the sourdough.  I keep it going as I write the next book.

The cover for HOPE, Book 1 in my new series is currently in round 3 of a cover contest, if anyone has a second to pop over and vote I would really appreciate it.

As I work on my new series, I found time to put my Seven Brides for Seven Brothers Series into a two-part boxed set.  Each volume contains a not-for-sale bonus novella.  These sets free to read in KU.

As a reader, do you prefer purchasing and reading the individual books or do you like them packaged into a boxed set to save you money?

And since we’re talking about baking, here’s a link to download a FREE cookie recipe book at your favorite on-line bookstore.  https://books2read.com/dickens-cookie

Happy baking.  Happy Reading.  Happy Thanksgiving.
Till next month,
Kathleen

WESTERN WIVES by Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

One of the many reasons I find the Wild West fun to write about is the opportunity afforded women during the time.  With a ten-men-to-every-woman ratio in many of the territories, women were more concerned about suitability than availability.  As someone who lives on an island where there are eight women to every man, I prefer those odds of 150 years ago.

Unlike the East, where a woman’s marriageability was more likely based on social standing, family background and financial prospects, in the West, things were different.  Even a woman of questionable background could marry a man of her choosing, and if it didn’t work out, divorce was relatively easy to obtain in most areas.

In keeping with those times I’m having a lot of fun writing about mail-order brides in the multi-author project, Widows, Brides and Secret Babies.  This popular, sweet western series stretches me as an author and offers me the chance to work with a talented array of other writers.

I’m excited for you to meet Olivia in June and Rachel in August.

As the train slowed to a stop Olivia rose, settled her wiggly daughter on one hip, and reached for her valise, which was light enough to lift with only hand.  Because she had left Philadelphia in a hurry, she had packed only the bare necessities for Chloe and herself.
She waited as passengers jostled past her, impatient to disembark.  No need to wonder if she would recognize Robert; she would know him anywhere.  When she stepped from the train, she spotted him instantly on the far side of the platform, talking to a plump, dowdy-looking woman.
Pushing aside her fears and uncertainty, she covered the ground between them and reached the pair just as the other woman fisted some money Robert handed her, and rushed off.
Olivia knew exactly what had happened.  Robert had changed his mind.   Again.  The same way he had when he left her high and dry in Philadelphia, in a family way.  That wouldn’t be happening a second time!
“Robert!  Her tone was more shrill than she intended, but it got his attention.  As he turned toward her, a myriad of expressions crossed his face.  Surprise and delight quickly faded to wariness.  His steps were hesitant as he approached her.
“Livie!  What are you doing here?”
          “Looking for you, obviously.”
          “I don’t understand!”
          “Neither do I.”
Olivia was vaguely aware that the platform had emptied around them as they stood, gazes locked.
“You look well,” he said finally.  “I see congratulations are in order.  Where’s Harry?”
“Harry died a few weeks ago.  Stumbled blind drunk in front of a train.”  She stated the facts with no more emotion than she had felt at the time, except relief that Harry was out of her life.
“I’m sorry to hear that.”  His gaze darkened with emotion, only to vanish as quickly as it appeared.  “If you came to me for comfort, you’ve come to the wrong place.”
“Nothing of the sort.”  She had come to ensure she and Chloe remained safe.
