From One Ranch to the Next

by Katina J Rose

The
Ridge Ranch series was a labor of love in every sense of the word. It dug in and stayed with me over the last several years, becoming more than just a setting on the page.

Those characters lived with me for a long time. I started writing Wyatt’s story back in 2020, and from there the Ridge boys grew up chapter by chapter. They fought hard for their happy endings and reminded me why I fell in love with writing small-town, cowboy romance in the first place. It was also the beginning of my author journey, and I’ve grown in ways I never expected along the way. Letting that ranch go was not easy, but it did something I did not expect.

It made room for what came next.

As it became clear the Ridge Ranch stories were coming to a close, another story began whispering in the background. Well, sometimes screaming but that’s besides the point.

This new series has been tugging at me for a while now. Three brothers. One farm and ranch that has been in the family for generations. Shared land, shared history, and shared wounds they would rather leave buried. Each of them carries his own version of responsibility, loyalty, and regret.

And yes, there has to be a playboy.

Every ranch has one. The brother who smiles easily, flirts harder, and pretends he has no interest in settling down. The one everyone assumes will be the last to fall, which usually means he falls the hardest. This one might make Cooper blush.

Add a little rodeo dust to the mix. Long nights under arena lights. The danger and adrenaline that come with eight seconds on a bull. Rodeo life has a way of testing a man’s limits, especially when someone in the stands matters more than winning.

At its heart, this series is still about what I love most. Family bonds that run deep. Men who work with their hands and love with their whole hearts. Women who challenge them, ground them, and refuse to be sidelined. And romance that burns slow before it blazes.

It will feel familiar, but different. A new ranch. New brothers. New love stories waiting to unfold.

While this ranch is quietly taking shape, it is not the only place calling my name.

I also have a cozy bed-and-breakfast series waiting in the wings. A place built on second chances, unexpected connections, and the kind of small-town magic that happens when people stay just a little longer than planned. There will also be a crossover. A step off the ranch and into the big city, where familiar faces find themselves navigating a very different kind of life.

But underneath every idea and every detour, there is another ranch. One that has been patiently waiting. One that is just begging to come alive.

When it does, you will know.

Because these cowboys are already making themselves at home.

So join me in 2026 as I build a new ranch series from the ground up.

Reindeer Facts and Mythology

By Kristy McCaffrey

Reindeer originally came from Europe and Asia, not the North Pole. The first reindeer in North America were brought over by Icelandic settlers around a thousand years ago, settling in Canada. They were also successfully introduced to Alaska.

Reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are a member of the deer family, which also includes elk, moose, and caribou. Unlike their cousins the white-tailed deer and mule deer, both males and females grow antlers, the only deer in which this is true. The woody part of the antlers is called “velvet” and is covered in tiny blood vessels. These vessels help to supply nutrients to the growing antler. Once the antlers are fully grown, the velvet dies and is shed. Antlers are typically larger on males.

Reindeer is the European name and is an adapatation of an Old Norse word knowns as hreindyri. The word dyr means animal and hreinn references a horned animal. The horns found on both male and female reindeer are important features to the survival of the animal.

Reindeer have gold eyes in the summer and blue in winter, and they can see light within the ultraviolet range. This helps their survival in the Arctic as many objects blend into the snowy landscape. It also improves their vision during continuous darkness and helps spot predators.

Reindeer are the only deer species to have hair completely covering their nose. Their specialized nose helps to warm incoming cold air before it enters their lungs, and it's also an excellent sniffer. Their good sense of smell helps them find food hidden under snow, locate danger, and recognize direction.

The first mention of Santa’s reindeer is in the 1823 poem “A Visit From St. Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore. He lists Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner, and Blitzen. Rudolph wasn’t added until 1939.

Since rutting season is in September and October, the males have lost weight and are exhausted by Decemeber so their antlers fall off to save energy during the hard winter months, meaning Santa’s reindeer are all female.

Reindeer symbolize wisdom, resourcefulness, and cleverness.

If you love reindeer, don’t miss Kristy’s Christmas novella, A Mirthful Wish, along with a prequel short story, The Reindeer That Got Away. Enjoy the holidays with these tales of small-town magic and romance.

A Mirthful Wish by Kristy McCaffrey

The Thatcher-Adler feud goes back generations. Despite this, Ellie Thatcher befriended Liam Adler when she was a girl. She even managed to get a job at the Adler Reindeer Farm while in high school, the very farm that had once belonged to her family. Now, with college and a stint working overseas behind her, she’s returning home to Reindeer Pass to open a photography studio. But the feud has been reignited, and Ellie and Liam are about to get dragged into the middle of it.

Liam Adler has returned to the Colorado town where he grew up to take over the family business after the sudden death of his father. It wasn’t the life path he’d planned, and now he must convince old Eustace Hapgood to sell his land to the Adlers and not the Thatchers. And his opponent is none other than Ellie Thatcher—no longer the sweet and funny little girl he remembers, but all grown-up and strikingly beautiful.

Years ago, Eustace told a young Ellie and Liam about the Legend of Reindeer Pass, where a rare Arctic reindeer herd is rumored to have lived since the first Thatcher and Adler men settled in the valley in the 1800’s. When Ellie and Liam appear before the old man, Eustace tells them he will sell to the first to see the Vaadin, the largest of the elusive female reindeer. But there is more to the legend … only the pure of heart are presented with such a gift. And to a special few, true love is granted.

An excerpt from A Mirthful Wish

Without warning, Ellie kissed Liam, bold and hungry. Wrapping his arms around her, he shifted her out of sight. There was nothing soft and chaste about them finally coming together, the contact escalating quickly to a heat level he was unprepared for.

He’d anticipated this going differently—slower and more private—but nothing with Ellie ever seemed to go to plan.

Ellie broke contact first, her breath fast and hot against his lips. A lingering taste of marinara sauce and sexy Ellie remained.

He didn’t know what to say.

“There was mistletoe,” she whispered, looking as stunned as he felt.

Her eyes flicked upward. A green sprig hung from a hook above their table.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” she said, then left him standing alone in the nook, too shocked to speak, a cold wave engulfing him after the loss of her heat.

Liam scrubbed a hand down his face, waiting for his heartbeat to slow to a reasonable rate.

When Ryan joined him, his brother frowned. “What’s wrong?”

“I think I’ve underestimated Ellie Thatcher.”

1887-1961 Hesperia Hotel: Locomotives, Candlelit Nights, and Western Charm

Imagine rolling into the high desert of California on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway. You step off the train and there it is: a three-story, red adobe beauty—the brand-new Hesperia Hotel. With 28 rooms, running water (a serious luxury at the time), and desert views for miles, it must have seemed like an oasis in the middle of nowhere.

The hotel sat on the west side of the railroad tracks, surrounded by 35,000 acres of land that speculators were eager to sell. Newspapers went so far as to call Hesperia “The Denver of California.” Bold claim, right?

A Desert Dream—or Desert Scheme?

The masterminds were Judge Robert Widney and his brother Dr. Joseph Widney, along with Ontario developers George and William Chaffey. They bought up land, gave the settlement a poetic name (Hesperia meaning “western land”), and launched a massive promotion campaign.

The sales pitch promised a desert utopia: broad tree-lined boulevards, shady parks, fine schools, grand churches, healthy air that could cure whatever ailed you, and even riches from mining in the nearby mountains.

The reality? Well… let’s just say some of it was more illusion than fact.

Trickery in the Desert

One of the most famous “sales tactics” involved tricking eager easterners who couldn’t tell a yucca from an orange tree. The promoters literally trimmed up Joshua trees and stuck oranges on the ends of their bayonet-like spikes to give the illusion of flourishing citrus groves.

Still, the developers grand idea did put Hesperia on the map—and today, more than 100,000 people call it home.

The Hotel’s Heyday

Back in its prime, the Hesperia Hotel was more than just a place to sleep. Guests enjoyed modern marvels like hot water, flushing toilets, and speaking tubes for communication. The hotel boasted a spacious dining room complete with a bandstand, a piano bar, and fancy balls in middle of the Mojave.

Once the California Southern Railroad line pushed through the Cajon Pass in 1885, many settlers and tourists came by rail. Victor (later Victorville) became the major stop, but Hesperia snagged its own small depot, drawing curious travelers. By the way, this platform actually could be moved.

The Beginning of the End

For a time, the hotel thrived. But when Route 66 rerouted travelers away from Hesperia, the once-bustling stop faded. The hotel closed its doors in 1926 and, after decades of decline, was torn down in 1974.

Today, nearby Los Flores Ranch lands are filled with tract homes, and the once-grand hotel exists only in photographs and stories.

Why This Hotel Caught My Eye

As a local, I couldn’t resist bringing the Hesperia Hotel back to life in my western time travel novel, Time to Save a Cowboy. It struck me as the perfect meeting place for my time-traveling lovers, Mia and Dusty, before they headed off for the Los Flores Ranch.

Small Town Festivals by Rhonda Lee Carver

As spring arrives, the season brings with it a sense of renewal and growth...

There's something nostalgic about small-town festivals.  Every town has one, or two, that townsfolk can't wait to attend.

In my small town, we have a festival, the Feast of the Flowering Moon. Held on Memorial Day weekend, the event features Native American music, dancing, rows of crafters, exhibits, and demonstrations by mountain men and women showcasing their skills. It was created to celebrate the rich Native American heritage of the area.

As kids, my friends and I would gather on the streets where the festival was in full swing. If you've ever heard the term "cruising", well, we cruised the festival on foot. From start to finish, we'd hang out, meet old friends and new friends, and catch up on teenage drama. One of my favorite things was the lemonade shake-ups. Not dissing those delicious concoctions in any way, but they were a mix of fresh-squeezed lemons, sugar, and a bit of water, served ice cold because it was always scorching hot on the streets. Where can a person go wrong? And the food... there's nothing quite like eating everything in sight--more sugar--and not having a single thought for calorie intake. Those were the days!

Although becoming an adult brings about changes, the demonstrations, dancing, and music remain highlights for many. Finding myself back on the streets alongside a lively crowd, it feels a lot like stepping into a time machine and going back to the days of being a carefree kid, hanging out with friends, and simply being.

I have a release coming up, May 27. Check it out, and Pre-Order! Click here to Pre-Order!

She threatens to crack the code to his heart, while he struggles with internal demons.
Jag, a retired SEAL, is starting a new chapter in Shades Cove. He looks forward to a peaceful life working on a ranch and the security company his buddy started. When he takes feisty Mercy under his wing, the universe shows him no mercy. She has a hair stuck where it doesn’t belong, and Jag becomes the target of her distress. But then the connection becomes strong, and emotions begin to simmer.
It turns out that Shades Cove isn’t safe for Mercy. Danger finds her in the small town. Can Jag protect her? The journey from the ranch to the bedroom is paved with good intentions.
Revisit all the characters you love from Book 1, Shades of Steel.

Book 2, Shades of Mercy.
There will be no mercy for Jag.
Sneak Peek:
She was supposed to be focusing on what the men were saying, after all, it dealt with her. Yet, she had brain fog. Jag fog. She pressed her hand against her belly and tried to calm the butterflies there.
How was it possible that Jag looked better with age?
And that she could still want him when she hated him just as much?
It would be foolish to allow her fantasies to become reality for a second time.
Jag was not the man for her. He was nothing but an anti-committal, egotistical player.
The last thing she needed, or wanted, was a man who loved his job and nothing else. Hell, he is his job.
Yet, he was undeniably gorgeous. Sexy. And any time he was near, she wanted to peel away his layers and get to the good stuff.
She could want him for another thirteen years, and he’d still never give her the things she wanted from a man: stability and affection.
She wanted to be someone’s all.
“Mercy?”
She pulled herself out of her thoughts and narrowed her gaze to her brother. “What?”
“I said, do you agree to the terms?” he asked.
She wanted to be stubborn and demand that he take her home, but they were past that point. So, she gave a curt, “Sure.”
“Great. Don’t worry, Mateo. She’ll be fine. I’ll guard her with my life.” Jag said, meeting Mercy’s gaze for a mere fleeting moment.
How would this work? How could she be near him? She was a pathetic, crushing thirty-two-year-old. She didn’t want to make a fool of herself, but it always seemed like she made a fumbling mess when he looked at her with the most amazing green eyes.
