Death Masks

By Kristy McCaffrey

A death mask is a likeness of a deceased person’s face following death. Typically constructed of wax or plaster, the impression is made directly from the corpse.

Death Mask of King Tut
In many cultures, a death mask was used during the funeral and was usually buried with the body. The Egyptians made them as part of the mummification process, the most famous being King Tut’s golden mask. They believed the death mask allowed the deceased person’s spirit to find its body in the afterlife.

Some African tribes believed a death mask imbued a wearer with the power of the dead. But in the Middle Ages, the practice became less of a spiritual link and more a way of preserving the dead. Death masks weren’t buried with the deceased but instead were used in funeral ceremonies and later kept in libraries, museums, and universities.

Famous death masks include Ludwig van Beethoven, Napoleon Bonaparte, Frederic Chopin, Oliver Cromwell, John Keats, Nikola Tesla, Mary Queen of Scots, and John Dillinger.

Alleged  death mask of Shakespeare.

In Kristy’s new story, BLUE SAGE, a death mask plays an important role.

BLUE SAGE is now available in the anthology A Cowboy To Keep!!

Blue Sage Excerpt
The day had warmed considerably and Audrey consumed most of her water as they continued to ride. She’d pulled a lavender bandanna from her pack and periodically used it to wipe perspiration from her face and neck, but she suspected her high temperature wasn’t all caused by the sunshine.

Braden Delaney had somehow jumpstarted her hormones, and while it was certainly thrilling, it was also a nuisance. It was one thing to flirt a bit as she trekked through the wilderness with a handsome cowboy, but quite another to feel a surge of—what had Brynn once called it? Bloodlust. That was it. A bone-deep hunger for another human being.

And she wasn’t certain it was only sex anymore.

When Braden had touched her hand, it had been as if an ancient connection had been restored.

She shook her head. She was becoming too whimsical.

It had to be the effect of Whisper Rock. She was certain something extraordinary had happened to her when she was in this area at nine years old. And now it was happening again.

The cawing of ravens resounded back to them as the horses dipped down into a valley. When they came to a rocky impasse, Braden dismounted.

“We go on foot from here,” he said.

Audrey swung down from Bowie, taking care with her sore knee. She stepped up to the horse’s head and patted his neck, then rubbed a hand down his snout.

“Thanks for being a nice guy,” she said quietly.

“You’re welcome,” Braden said, gifting her with a teasing smile.

The Anatomy of a Boxed Set- Come Love A Cowboy by Kathleen Ball #ASMSG #CLAC

Come Love A Cowboy is my forth boxed set. I was honored and excited to be invited to each. You've heard the old adage- women can't work together. Total nonsense. Many of the boxed sets made USA Today best seller lists. Since most sell at 99cents readers have wondered why we do it.

I do it for the exposure. I do Western romance sets with other authors in the hope that their fans will soon become my fans. If the set is good it works. Are we under valuing our work- you bet but sales of my other books from the new fans make up for it.

If you have a good leader, strong writers, and everyone willing to market, that is the secret to success. You need to see the big picture, not just your book. You also have to have a thick skin. The group may not like your idea and that's fine. If you can go with the flow it can be a great experience.

Luke’s Fate
By Kathleen Ball

Blurb:
Meg O’Brien hoped never to lay eyes on the one man who broke her heart. To her dismay, Luke Kelly arrives at her ranch a much different and broken man. Can Meg ever forgive his callous treatment of her and help Luke become the man he used to be?

Excerpt:

“You’ve changed,” he said, his voice soft and low.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
He hesitated. “You used to be easy to read. You wore your emotions on your sleeve. Now I don’t know what you think except you want me gone. I can understand why. I mean I left you just as we were starting something good, something I had hoped would be permanent.”
“Permanent?”
“You must have known how I felt about you. I was just waiting for you to grow up so I could start dating you.”
Tears filled her eyes. All this time she had thought he didn’t find her appealing. “You left without a word.”
“I know, and I’ll be forever sorry for hurting you.”
Tears trailed down her face, and she closed her eyes willing them to stop. “Why?” Her voice squeaked.
Luke shook his head. “I wish I could tell you but I can’t.
Meg wiped away her tears. “Can’t or won’t?” She waved her hand at him. “You know, don’t, just don’t. The whole town thinks I drove you away. I’ve lived the last five years with people whispering behind my back. I don’t even bother going into town unless I have to. Now  I’m foreman of this ranch, I’m perfectly content with my life. I do what I love, and people stay out of my way.”
Luke’s stare was intense. “Is that what you want? You want people to stay out of your way? Hell, Margaret Mary, I thought you’d gone on with your life. I expected to find you with a husband and babies. Even I got married.” His face shuttered as he turned away.
Married? No one had told her. Her mouth opened but there were no words. She folded her arms in front of her trying to keep from flying apart and her stomach threatened to rebel. What a fool, she’d been, thinking all this time that something tragic had happened to him, thinking he’d be back for her if he could, and the whole time he’d been married.
Of course, he would have dated while he’d been gone, but marriage… Her thoughts had never strayed that far. How stupid, of course he’d be married. If imagining it would have been too much for her, the reality was shattering. Her body began to shake, and she clasped her hands together trying to still herself. After a few large swallows it worked, but the lump in her throat stayed.
Well, where the hell was his wife now? She should be here wiping her husband’s nose instead of leaving it to others. He had the gall to come here when he had a wife? Her stomach dropped. Was he planning to build a house on his land and live there, raising a family?
Everyone had told her to get on with her life but she refused to listen. Damn my stubborn hide!

Luke’s Fate started as a free Sunday serial my publisher had on their website. I added a new part every week and it ended up with 366 parts before it was done. Not only did I have to keep readers entertained, I had to keep it exciting for me to write each week. It’s packed with action, romance and suspense. I hope you enjoy it.

Rawhide 'n Roses Western Short Story Anthology

Today, rather than write about a cowboy or western-related subject, I’d like to take the opportunity to talk about a western anthology that I am privileged to be a part of. Several contributors of Cowboy Kisses are also part of this collaboration. I’m excited and pleased to be partnering with more than a dozen other western romance writers for the short story Anthology, Rawhide 'n Roses, which is set for release on March 15th.

When the idea was first proposed on the Western Romance Writers thread on the Amazon Meet Our Authors Forum for each of the authors to write a short story and publish it as a collection, I jumped at the chance. A short story of roughly 2000 words? Sure. No problem. How hard could it be?
Famous last words. Writing a short story is a real challenge, as I came to find out very fast. I think the shortest novel I’ve written is just under 70,000 words. Writing a complete story using fewer words than an average chapter soon became an almost impossible undertaking.
For my story, I chose to go with what was familiar to me, namely the Yellowstone setting from my Yellowstone Romance Series and its spin-off trilogy, the Teton Romance Trilogy. I picked a character I introduced briefly as a very minor character in Teton Splendor, added the character who is the hero in my current WIP, Teton Sunset, and added a new character, to build my story. The resulting short story is called Yellowstone Proposal, which takes place in the time between the last two of the Teton books, Teton Splendor and Teton Sunset.

Blurb:

Evan Connelly has been in love with Kara Russell since he first arrived in St. Louis. But how could he possibly tell her? He was from Boston, and she grew up in the wilderness of a place he’d only heard of. She couldn’t possibly see anything in him. When Kara returns home to her beloved mountains, can Evan find the courage to follow her and make his feelings known?

Excerpt:

“Mr. Osborne? I would like to request a leave of absence.”
Zach Osborne had glanced up from the papers he’d been studying at his desk.
“Do you need to return to Boston?”
“No, sir. I . . . ah . . . I made a mistake when Miss Russell left.”
“Mistake?” The corners of Zach’s mouth twitched. “What sort of mistake?”
“I let her get away, sir.” Evan glanced at the ground. “I should have told her that I love her.”
“You want to go after her?” Zach’s eyebrows rose.
“I’ve lived in Boston all my life, Mr. Osborne. All I’ve known is how to keep my nose in a book. My family was in disbelief when I told them I was moving to St. Louis. Here, I met a girl I would like to make my wife, and I should have made my feelings known. If she rejects me, then so be it, but at least I won’t have any regrets that I didn’t try to win her over.”
“I wish I could go with you, Evan, but you know I can’t leave the practice on such short notice.”
“I’m not asking you to go with me.”
“All right, Evan, but you’ll need a guide to take you up the Yellowstone.”
Three days later, Zach Osborne had introduced him to Lucas Walker, an army scout who was heading back home to the Tetons for the winter.
“You’re in love with little Kara?” Lucas had given him the skeptical once-over. “I warn you right now. That girl is a handful. I’ve known her since we were little kids. Her claws are sharper than those of a mountain lion.”
“The Kara Russell I’ve met was nothing less than a lady,” Evan said, standing taller.
“Suit yourself.” Lucas shrugged, grinning broadly. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you. Just understand that heading to the Yellowstone will be harsher than anything you’ll ever experience.”
“It’ll be worth it, if I can win Miss Russell’s hand.”
Lucas laughed. “You sound like my brother. He suffered from a sickness of the heart, too. I sure as hell hope I’m never afflicted. I don’t need my brain addled that way.”
“When do we leave?”
“Before first light in the morning.”

The Yellowstone Romance Series

For Aimee Donovan, it started out as an unbelievable journey into the past. Little did she know that her time travel would shape the destiny of the place we know today as Yellowstone.
The Yellowstone Romance Series is an enticing mixture of adventure, love, and danger through the generations as we meet the Osborne and Russell families.
From the dawn of the rugged and untamed wilderness of Yellowstone to the majestic national park we know today, we feel the passion, heartache, and excitement on every page.
