New Release--Christmas Wishes

I’m happy to announce my latest release, Christmas Wishes. This is my third short Christmas story and features U.S. Marshall Chance McBride and Tabitha Weston. Tabitha is Royce Weston’s daughter. Royce was my first hero in Luck of the Draw, and Tabitha is every bit as feisty as her pa. Below is an excerpt from Chapter One:

Coyote, CO  December 1880

Chance McBride cracked open one eye. Then the other. With the exception of the moon’s pale light filtering through the trees, darkness surrounded him. His teeth chattering disturbed the stillness hanging on the air, and awakened his other senses. His legs and bottom were wet and numb, his fingers stiff, and his side burned.
What the? His gaze collided with the snow he sat in. Droplets of blood marring the tufts beside him loosened his memory. Damn, Smarty. The bastard had left him for dead this morning.
Pushing aside an image of himself tightening a noose around Smarty’s neck, Chance stifled a groan and peered around the Cottonwood he slumped against. Not more than twenty paces from where he shivered a dim light shone behind a curtained window. He’d happened upon the schoolhouse when the sun had dipped toward the west― staggered toward it had been more like it. Hunkering down between snow-laden limbs and overgrown shrubs, he’d watched boys fling open the front door and hurl snowballs at one another as they raced along a trampled path to town. Girls clad in woolen scarves and mittens had followed at a slower pace. But a teacher had never appeared.
Chance grimaced and grabbed a handful of snow. He reached beneath his coat and pressed it against his side, shifted his gaze north to the structure he remembered seeing in the daylight. The headmaster has to exit sometime. If for anything to use the privy.
Sneering, he returned his attention to the school and studied the large addition that had been built onto the back. Earlier he’d noted a festive wreath nailed to the side door; the silver ribbons a grim reminder he wouldn’t celebrate Christmas with his brother. Shoving the thought aside, he inhaled the aroma of wood burning and something else―food cooking.
His stomach grumbled at the prospect of a hot meal. It’d been four days since he’d tasted something more rewarding than stale biscuits and jerky. Not that he complained. He was alive and hoped the same held true for his mare. She’d taken offense to bullets pelting her hooves, had reared up on her hind legs and unseated him before bolting toward the hills. Truth be told he couldn’t blame her. Being ambushed didn’t sit well with him, especially when a bullet from Steve ‘Smarty’ Jones’ Colt found its way into his side. The best he could hope was his mare galloped to safety, even though it meant he was horseless―again.
“Shoulda never bought her,” he lamented. “Green as she is.” But his trained Appaloosa and loyal companion of five years had come up lame on a late November day. Unless he’d wanted to lose Smarty’s trail, he’d had no choice but to purchase the young mustang.
The side door opened. A ray of light brightened the threshold and the figure stepping outside.
Shit! His gut spasmed. The teacher wasn’t what he’d imagined. Instead of trousers and a hat, Chance saw a slim body in long skirts. Bile filled his mouth. Overpowering a female wasn’t to his liking, but he didn’t have a choice. He’d been out in the elements too long and his aching side demanded relief. He had to get indoors and patch himself up―with or without her permission.
The woman stepped away from the door and moved toward a woodpile at the rear of the building. Chance awkwardly pulled himself to his full height of six feet two inches and stifled a groan. The flow of blood returning to his legs brought on the feel of a thousand needles pricking his skin. Ignoring the sensation, he stumbled forward on quiet feet, closing the distance between him and the woman. As she lifted a log from the top of the pile, he clamped his left hand over her mouth and his right arm around her waist.
“Mmmmmmmmm…” she screeched behind his hand, dropping the wood and trying to twist free from his clutches.
“Easy,” he barked out a whisper, pulling her flush against him. A sharp stab of pain speared his side and he sucked in a deep breath, felt himself sway on his feet. “I don’t aim to hurt you, ma’am.”
“Mmmmmmmmmm…” she screeched again and tried to kick him. He avoided the blow to his shin.
“I’m Chance McBride,” he panted. “U.S. Marshall.”
Heated, garbled words sounded in her throat.
“Yeah, I get that a lot,” he quipped dryly before turning them toward the door. His gut threatened upheaval and he paused to tamp down the queasiness. They cleared the threshold and Chance welcomed the blast of warm air pelting his face. He kicked the door shut and released her, only to have the air swoosh out of his lungs when she whirled around and faced him.
Thick, lustrous honey-colored hair cascaded over her shoulders to curl around her waist. Smooth, ivory skin, a pert nose and a tiny dimple set in her chin lent way to a decidedly feminine body. But it wasn’t her soft curves or the sight of his blood staining her calico dress that robbed him of breath. Eyes the shade of a deep blue sky glared up at him. And stirred something within.
“Do you make it a habit of manhandling women?” Her gaze raked him with contempt.
“No,” he rasped. “I didn’t have a choice.”
“Hmph! A Marshall―if you’re truly a lawman, and I have my doubts. I don’t see a badge―always has a choice.”
“Not this time.” He shoved a hand into his pocket and withdrew a piece of tin, held it up for her to see. “Does this make you think better of me?”
She studied the star then wrinkled her nose. “No.”

Christmas Past

by Shanna Hatfield

While I was working on The Christmas Vow , the fourth book in the Hardman Holidays sweet Victorian romance series, I wandered through past Christmases by looking through images of antique Christmas items.

As a huge fan of the Victorian era and Christmas, those hours spent researching were entirely full of bliss for this girl! The story takes place in the 1890s in the eastern Oregon town of Hardman.

Columbia River Pilot Adam Guthry returns to his hometown of Hardman, Oregon, to pay his last respects after the sudden death of his life-long best friend. Emotions he can’t contain bubble to the surface the moment he sees the girl who shattered his heart eleven years ago.  Widow Tia Devereux escapes her restrictive life in Portland, returning to the home she knew and cherished as a girl in Hardman. She and her four-year-old son, Toby, settle into the small Eastern Oregon community, eager for the holiday season. Unfortunately, the only man she’s ever loved shows up, stirring the embers of a long-dead romance into a blazing flame.  When her former father-in-law, a corrupt judge, decides he wants to raise Toby, Adam may be the only hope she has of keeping her son.

Throw in a cranky cat named Crabby, some well-meaning friends, and a meddling brother... and you've got some real holiday fun.

A few of the items I found in my research ended up in the story, like this fun sleigh with lithographs printed  on the sides. In the story, Adam has the storekeeper fill the open section with nuts.

A big skating party plays an important part in the story.

While Adam and Tia are having a grand time, Toby and his little friend spend more time falling down than they do upright.

This photo inspired a fun interaction between the children and adults.

Every little boy needs a sled. This one is similar to the sled Toby receives Christmas morning.

“I believe that’s exactly the point.” Adam’s lopsided grin revealed his dimples and made her mouth water for want of his kiss.
Aggravated with herself, Tia aimed her fury at Adam. “The point is your recklessness might get you or someone else horribly injured.” She turned around and strode toward the kitchen door. “I insist you…”
A snowball caught her square in the back. Mouth hanging open in surprise, she spun around and glared at him.
Adam worked to form another snowball, ignoring her scowl.
Incensed, Tia surrendered to the need to stamp her foot. “How dare you!”
“Just like this.” He grinned and lobbed another snowball at her, catching her on the shoulder. Bits of snow sprayed into her face and hair.
“Oh! You are in for it now, Adam Guthry!” Tia bent down and hastily formed a snowball. With unmistakable precision, she threw it at Adam, hitting him on the chin.
He spluttered and returned fire, barely grazing her arm as she twisted away at the last second.
Peals of her laughter filled the quiet December afternoon and drew Toby outside as she and Adam continued to throw snow at each other.
“Mama?” The little boy’s lip quivered. “Did you send me inside so you could play without me?”

Too stunned to reply, Celia gulped and continued staring at him, gradually comprehending she hadn’t been killed.

At least she assumed she hadn’t died, unless angels wore dusty cowboy hats, dark blue chaps, and were breath-stealing handsome.

Celia experienced the most unreasonable urge to run her fingers along the stubbly expanse of his cheeks, down his square jaw, and over his strong chin. Mesmerized by his full bottom lip, she inhaled a deep breath and nearly choked.
The very scent of him hinted at a lethal combination of freshly fallen snow, a warm winter fire, and sweet seduction rolled into one incredibly enticing package.

#NewRelease ~ THE CROW AND THE BEAR by Kristy McCaffrey

I'm so excited to share a BRAND NEW, never-before-published short novella ~ The Crow and the Bear. If you read The Crow and the Coyote, a spooky Old West romance that was released last Halloween (in the Cowboys, Creatures and Calico Vol. 2 anthology and more recently as a single sell), then you might remember that hero Jack Boggs had two brothers, Callum and Kit. This tale features Cal. I'm still brewing a story for Kit.

The idea for The Crow and the Bear came to me during the summer when my family and I visited Silverton, Colorado, an old mining town situated in an imposing valley of the Rocky Mountains. While touring the local museum I became fascinated by the Tommyknockers.

Silverton, Colorado
A Tommyknocker is a type of troll spirit who lives underground and was therefore of great concern to miners. The term originated in the British Isles, but superstitions surrounding the beings filtered into other places. Miners in Colorado took great care to appease the Knockers by leaving a bit of their lunch out for the sprites.

Standing about two feet tall with a grizzled appearance, many believe that Snow White’s dwarves were Tommyknockers. They usually wear standard miner’s garb and are responsible for any mischief that might befall a miner, such as losing tools and food.

The name derives from the knocking on mine walls that precedes a cave-in, which is usually just the creaking of earth and timbers before failing. Some miners believed the Knockers were malevolent beings, but others took them to be practical jokers.

In Cornish folklore, the Knockers were spirits of those who had died in previous mine accidents and were now trying to help the living, by warning of impending dangers. As an offering of thanks, miners usually cast the last bite of their lunch pastie (a type of meat pie) into the mines for the Knockers.

In the 1820’s, Welsh immigrants to Pennsylvania brought tales of the Knockers with them and their presence soon spread all the way to California. Belief in the Knockers remained well into the 20th century. During the closing of a mine in 1956, a petition was circulated by the miners to set the Knockers free (so they could move to another mine) before sealing the entrances, and the owners complied.

The Crow Series: Book 2
Short Novella
Bounty hunter Callum Boggs—sometimes called Crow—arrives in the mining town of Silverton on a cold October day in search of a man who has committed unspeakable crimes. Skilled in the technique of dream scouting, Crow has narrowed the location of the criminal to Silas Ravine. No normal man would dare to venture into this region, where so many gruesome and unexplained murders have taken place—a piece of land forever haunted where Death still walks. But Crow is no normal man...

Jennie Livingstone knows her papa is in trouble. When none of the local men will come to her aid, she must accept a newly-arrived stranger—a half-Comanche bounty hunter—as her only ally. As they head into the mountains to track Jennie’s father, she can hear more than the whispers of man. The mines carry spirits, and her only hope in navigating the living and the dead lies with the Crow.

But is Jennie prepared for the consequences of where her fate with Callum Boggs may lead? And is she the woman who can hold fast to the Crow’s heart after all his years alone? Bewitched by the beautiful young woman, Callum must do everything he can to stay one step ahead of the spirits that can’t rest—just to keep Jennie and himself alive.

The Crow Series: Book 1
Short Novella
In Arizona Territory, Hannah Dobbin travels through Cañon de Chelly, home to the Navajo, in search of a sorcerer who murdered her pa. Only when she retrieves the silver cross taken from her father's corpse will she be able to free her pa's spirit, and allow him to be at peace.

Bounty Hunter Jack Boggs—known as Crow—is on the trail of a vile Mexican bandito when he discovers Hannah and her companion, a superstitious old Navajo woman. He knows he must protect them, but with the shadows of Hallowtide descending, more dark magic is at hand than any of them know.
