Rankin Scott Kelly - First Sheriff

 Post by Doris McCraw

aka Angela Raines

Before I share the story of Kelly, I want to thank everyone for a great 'book' party. It was great fun and kudos to Julie for overseeing such a wonderful event.

Now on to the story of Rankin Scott Kelly. I've shared his remarkable story in other places, but it is worth revisiting.

Image from Find a Grave

In El Paso County, Colorado, Rankin Scott Kelly, was the first sheriff taking his job in 1861 and served until 1867. El Paso County was one of the original 17 counties formed when Colorado became a territory in 1861 from parts of Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and New Mexico Territories.

Imagine if you will, one Sheriff having to enforce the law in an area around two thousand square miles. He did and was well-liked by those who were lawful and feared by those who were lawless.

A lot of his early life is unknown. This may be due in part to the belief he'd killed his sister's fiance' at the age of fourteen. He fled from Holton, Maine, and headed west. He really doesn't show up in census records in those early years.

You can learn more from two sources. One is the biography, Amazon link for the book, written by former El Paso County Sheriff, John Anderson, and the video linked here: "The Sheriff.

My exciting news from Kentucky! by Jan Scarbrough

First, I have a new website! Take a look!!  https://janscarbrough.com/

Thanks to Jessica at Meet Cute Creative for the design.

Second, I’m having three of the Ghost Mountain Ranch series books made into audio books. I can’t wait! When I heard the trial read of one chapter, I couldn’t believe I’d written it. The audio version made the chapter and characters come alive. I’ll let you know when they are finished.

Will the revelation of more shocking secrets from the past destroy their hopes for the future? The Ghost Mountain Ranch series is a good blend of mystery and romance.

Ghost Mountain Ranch is a series of books that should be read together if you’re going to discover the mystery included in the romances of the main characters. That’s why I collected the three books together in one set. The paperback has all four books in it.

The fourth book is a novella about Hank, a secondary character from the series Dawsons of Montana. Hank goes on to become Darby’s love interest in Ghost Mountain Ranch.

Hank brings two romantic series together: The Dawsons of Montana and Ghost Mountain Ranch!

Monikers Matter!

What's In a Name?

For me, everything. I spend hours finding just the right names for the characters in my novels. Until I find the perfect names, I can't even begin to outline the book. Same thing when it comes to a book title. I must have a title before I can begin writing the book! Crazy, huh?

Oh, I have tried to push on without the names hammered down, but I don't get anywhere. I have even named a hero, written two chapters, decided the name wasn't right, stopped in my tracks to rename the hero, and then I had to write the two chapters over again because the hero changed completely in my mind when he had a new name.

Names conjure up certain images in my imagination. It doesn't matter to me if my friends don't like the names. I have had my best writer friend say, “I hate that name. You must change the heroine's name. It's awful.” But I shrugged and stuck to my guns. She had been christened and I was well pleased with her, name and all.

After I have the names, then I create a character profile for each one. Not just a physical description, but what makes the character tick. What is he/she frightened of? Where is the person most vulnerable? What happened in the past to shape this person? When this character looks in the mirror, what does he/she see? I might write a whole page on the main characters and half a page on the supporting characters. I add to the profiles as I write the book. That helps me to not forget story threads and character details.

Secondary characters can often benefit from a name that conjures up an image or goes well with their personality. For example, a short cowpoke might be dubbed “Shorty” and “Stumpy.” The wagon train cook could be called “Cookie” or “Skillet.” An auburn-haired saloon gal might be “Garnet” or a round-faced preacher could be named “Pastor Moon.” In this way, it becomes easier for readers to recall secondary characters who might not pop up in your story often.

If an editor asked me to change a name, she or he would have to possess an airtight reason for it, and chances are, the editor would lose the battle. Years later, when I hear one of my hero's names or my heroine's names, I can immediately see them in my mind's eye and I can hear them in my writer's ear.

I have caved in and changed a book's title at the request of an editor/publisher. And I rue each title that was changed. A couple of them are my least favorite and, frankly, are senseless. They could be slapped on practically any romance book.

I am genuinely fond of the hero and heroine in each of my novels and even a few of the secondary characters. They are my creations, names and all.

It is the season of giving. Give yourself more time this month to daydream and to write -- and to think of some lovely names!

The party begins at 10 a.m. Pacific Time and runs all day with guest authors, games, giveaways and so much more!
It kicks off my 10th annual Read A Book, Help a Cowboy campaign that raises funds and awareness for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund. The JCCF provides a hand up through monetary assistance to rodeo athletes who have received catastrophic injuries and are unable to work. Instead of worrying where the money will come from to pay rent or house payments, or keep the power turned on, they can focus on healing.

Happy November!

The story will continue in A MIRTHFUL WISH, available December 14, 2023!

The Thatcher-Adler feud goes back generations. Despite this, Ellie Thatcher befriended Liam Adler when she was a girl. She even managed to get a job at the Adler Reindeer Farm while in high school, the very farm that had once belonged to her family. Now, with college and a stint working overseas behind her, she’s returning home to Reindeer Pass to open a photography studio. But the feud has been reignited and Ellie and Liam are about to get dragged into the middle of it.

Liam Adler has returned to the Colorado town where he grew up to take over the family business after the sudden death of his father. It wasn’t the life path he’d planned, and now he must convince old Eustace who lives in the Buckley Cabin to sell his adjacent land to the Adlers and not the Thatchers. And his opponent is none other than Ellie Thatcher—no longer the sweet and funny little girl he remembers, but all grown-up and strikingly beautiful.

Years ago, Eustace told a young Ellie and Liam about the Legend of Reindeer Pass, where a rare Arctic reindeer herd is rumored to have lived since the first Thatcher and Adler men settled in the valley in the 1800’s. When Ellie and Liam appear before the old man, Eustace tells them he will sell to the first to see the Vaadin, the largest of the elusive female reindeer. But there is more to the legend … only the pure of heart are presented with such a gift. And to a special few, true love is granted.

When Christmas comes around, everyone has their own special wish. For some, those wishes are as simple as getting the perfect gift for that special someone. For others, those wishes are much bigger. Especially, when they wish for love.

Everyone deserves the gift of love, but sometimes that's more complicated than it should be.

This year is different.

For those pure of heart, their wishes, even their wishes for true love, just might be granted.

Wishing for Love is a heartwarming series about Christmas wishes of love coming true for those who have the purest of hearts. If you're looking for a feel-good read this holiday season, pick up A MIRTHFUL WISH to meet the authors of this heartwarming holiday romance series and find your next happy ever after.
