Roped Into Paradise

Picture a snowy central Oregon ranch, with several feet of snow on the ground in mid-January. Envision a handsome rancher up in the wee hours of the morning, scraping the windshield of his pickup so he can drive to the airport.

This cowboy is heading to Florida, as he does every year, to spend two weeks with his grandmother at her condo, completing her honey-do list and celebrating her birthday.

JJ travels light, just two changes of clothes in his duffle bag. Grams has a washing machine, and he's left the paint clothes he's worn on previous visits there anyway.

When he arrives at the condo, hours later than he planned due to ice on the runway and missing his connecting flight, he finds his grandmother's hot pink luggage piled just inside the door of her condo.

Too tired to consider what it means, he heads to bed, only to be awakened early by Grams, who informs him they need to do some shopping for him before they leave to catch their 11-day cruise to the Caribbean.

My new release, Roped Into Paradise, is the story of JJ, Grams, her wacky friends, and a cruise that will change his life forever when he unexpectedly falls in love with the horticulturist on the ship.

A cowboy, a cruise, and a meddling grandma.
What could go wrong?

JJ McKade expected to spend two weeks with his grandmother at her condo in sunny Florida, celebrating her birthday. Instead, he got shanghaied by his mischievous grandma on a Caribbean cruise—complete with hot pink luggage, a gaggle of giggling octogenarians, and a humiliating childhood nickname haunting his every move.

Between meddling matchmakers, unexpected friendships, and the endless chaos of cruise life, JJ can’t help being drawn to Kinsley Kline, the ship’s enchanting horticulturist. There’s just one catch: crew fraternizing with passengers is strictly forbidden.

With only a few months left in her contract aboard The Affinity, Kinsley can’t let anything rock her boat or derail her plans. Then the arrival of a hunky cowboy on the ship makes her question if some rules are meant to be broken, and a little boat rocking is a good thing.

From sun-drenched beaches to moonlit strolls, JJ and Kinsley must decide if an onboard romance can last on land, and if love is worth risking their hearts.

Packed with laughter, longing, and a grandmother who refuses to play by the rules, Roped Into Paradise is a heartwarming romantic comedy about family, hope, and finding love where you least expect it. Perfect for fans of witty banter, slow-burn romance, and cruise ship escapades that sweep you off your feet.

Wanted… Dead or Alive: Haunting Legends of the West

Are you brave enough to visit the Old West?

Ghosts of the past, long-lost lovers, and saloon patrons who never closed out their tab are said to linger in the Old West. From abandoned hotels to creaky barns, the frontier is full of eerie echoes. The West doesn’t just serve up history—it dishes out chills, thrills, and plenty of ghostly charm.

Here are some of my favorite haunted ghost towns (and the restless spirits you might bump into on your visit).

Calico, California 1881-1907

Once a booming silver mining town, Calico is now a preserved ghost town. Walter Knott (yes, of Knott’s Berry Farm fame) worked the silver mines before buying the town and restoring its frontier charm.

👻 Phantom footsteps echo through empty saloons. Whispers drift across dusty streets.

Visitors swear they’ve seen a ghostly dog—Dorsey, the town’s legendary mail carrier—still making his rounds with a phantom satchel.

Then there’s Lucy Lane, the “Queen of Calico.” Married to shopkeeper John Lane, Lucy spent most of her life in this town. Today, she’s often spotted in a black lace dress, strolling from her house to the general store or rocking gently in a chair she hasn’t left in over 100 years.

Calico didn’t just keep its buildings—it kept its ghosts.

Tombstone, Arizona 1879

Smaller than you’d expect, Tombstone is still one of the West’s most famous stops. Home of the O.K. Corral, it’s ground zero for haunted cowboy lore.

Keep an eye out for:

Shadows slipping through saloon doors long after closing time.

Virgil Earp still haunting the Crystal Palace Saloon.

Big Nose Kate and a host of outlaw regulars at her saloon.

Marshal Fred White, gunned down in 1880, said to still wander near the Bird Cage Theatre.

Ben the Ghost, who keeps misbehaving spirits in line at Smokey’s Emporium (once the undertaker’s).

A nurse at the old hospital and a phantom figure at the high school.

If you’re brave enough to visit after dark, Tombstone lives up to its name.

Bodie, California 1877-1881

If you want to step back in time, Bodie is your stop. It’s a ghost town frozen in the , and it feels like its residents just… never left.

Eerie sightings include:

Killed in a tragic mining accident, a three-year-old giggles are still heard around her tiny grave.

A lady ghost in the Dechambeau House, forever peering from an upstairs window.

A kind-hearted prostitute who died caring for sick miners but was denied a burial in town lingers near the red-light district.

The spirits of vigilante justice: Bodie’s infamous “601” group carried out hanging. Their victims may still be seeking vengeance.

Bodie isn’t just a historic site—it’s a whole town of restless echoes.

Spooky Cowboy Legends of the West

The ghost towns are only half the story. The Wild West is one giant campfire tale waiting to spook you:

🌵 Phantom cattle drives. Cowboys who never made it home are still seen herding ghostly longhorns across the plains.

🌵Haunted stagecoaches. In Deadwood, South Dakota, a spectral stagecoach rattles through the streets at night, pulled by ghost horses and leaving a misty chill in its wake.

🌵 Outlaw hideouts. Sheriff Plummer of Bannack was hanged for his crime. hHe and his gang are still said to stalk their old mining camp.

🌵 The headless horse thief. In South Texas, a thief who was beheaded and strapped to a wild mustang, now rides headless across the desert forever.

These tales blur the line between folklore and history which makes them irresistible.

How to Experience the Haunted West

Guided ghost tours – Hear the legends from local historians (and maybe a ghost or two).

Evening visits – Sunset and moonlight bring the West’s eeriest vibes.

Dress the part – Cowboy boots + a wide-brim hat.

Halloween events – From haunted saloon tours to spooky stagecoach reenactments, fall is the best time to go ghost chasing.

Final Roundup

Between dusty saloons, moonlit legends, and spirits that refuse to rest, you’ll find history, chills, and maybe even a little romance.

Are you ready to go ghost town hopping?

When Is the Harvest Moon 2025? by Reggi Allder

The Harvest Moon is not always in the same month. It’s the full moon that occurs nearest to the autumn equinox (September 22 or 23).

This means that the Harvest Moon can occur in September or October, depending on how the lunar cycle aligns with the Gregorian calendar.
Gregorian calendars are based on the progression through the seasons as the Earth revolves around the Sun.

The Harvest Moon refers to the full, bright moon that occurs closest to the start of autumn. The name dates from the time before electricity.

According to the Farmer’s Almanac in 2025, the bright Harvest Moon is on Monday, October 6, full illumination at 11:47 P.M. The full moon will last for three days, including the prior night of October 5 and the following night of October 7. If the Harvest Moon is not in September, the full moon is called a Corn Moon. If the Harvest Moon is not in October, the full moon is often known as a Hunter’s Moon.

When farmers depended on the moon’s light to harvest their crops, they worked late into the night. With the bright light from the full moons, the longer days helped them to harvest the crops before the colder months arrived.

Cowboys were not specifically affected by the moon except to say they worked dawn to dusk, so in that sense, they had to work longer hours during the Harvest Moon.
Why mention these full moon dates in late August? If you know, you might plan to be somewhere you can see the bright illumination unaffected by city lights.

Her Country Heart by Reggi Allder Sierra Creek Series Book 1 of 4 books. Amy Long needs a forever home. Downsized, she lost her apartment in the city and returned to the small town of Sierra Creek to find a fresh start. In the California foothills, she plans to run her grandmother’s organic apple farm and harvest the apples.

Does Amy belong? Cowboy Wyatt Cameron doesn’t think so. She’s in the way of his plans and as executor of her grandmother’s estate, he has the power to send her packing.

What can she offer to change his mind?

5 stars reviews “If you love cowboys, small towns, second chances, and real-to-life characters, the Country Heart Sierra Creek books are for you!” “Perfect when you need a feel-good read.” “A seriously great book!!” “Great characters, I couldn’t stop reading to find out what happened next!” ★

Excerpt:

Her Country Heart by Reggi Allder

Wyatt’s black pickup truck was parked at the curb in front of the building when she came out of the courthouse.

“I’ll drive you to Granny’s farm.”

Don’t you mean your farm? She bit back the caustic reply. A thief, the thought of sitting next to him in the truck turned her stomach. But with no cab or bus in town, a five-mile walk to Granny’s house dragging a giant suitcase in one-hundred-degree heat wasn’t appealing either. She squelched the need to tell him what he could do with his ride. With a hiss under her breath, she got in his truck and slammed the door shut.

“Amy, did you say something?”

“No.”

He looked unconvinced but started the engine without saying anything more.

A few minutes later, the Ford turned off the two-lane highway onto Star Route Three.

She waited for Granny’s property to come into view at the end of the road. Had it been two years since she’d come home? It seemed like yesterday. How could everything look the same when her world had totally changed?

In anticipation, she sat forward. The apple orchards appeared first, the trees green-leafed and flushed with fruit almost ready to be harvested. No matter how many new brands of apples came on the market, the red delicious apple defined the fruit for her.

The white two-story traditional American farmhouse with its pointed gables and wraparound porch, so popular in the Sierra Foothills, glistened in the late afternoon. Her chest tightened at the sight.

Soon, the sun would be setting. So many times, she and Granny had sat on the porch peeling apples for applesauce as they watched the late afternoon sky turn orange.

Wyatt drove the truck into the driveway and turned off the engine. Anxious to get into the house, she reached into her pocket and felt for the key Granny had given her many years earlier.

“If you will get my suitcase out of the truck, I won’t keep you. I’m sure you’d like to get home.”

Wyatt’s eyebrows rose as he turned to face her. “I thought you understood—I live here.”

Why do authors not mention what's underneath the jeans? by Rhonda Lee Carver

I love reading reader questions. They definitely put a smile on my face. Recently, I was asked by one reader, "When those sexy cowboys are undressing, why don't authors mention what kind of undies they're wearing?" Great question. I've thought of this too, at least for myself.

So, let's think about this together...

Are you interested in what style of undies sexy cowboys wear? After all, there could be all kinds of problems down there if a man isn't wearing something that's comfortable.

1. What undies look best on a man?

2. What feels best?

Something soft and silky, perhaps?

3. What supports the man with a BIG...ego?

4. What's most functional?

What do you think?

New Cover. New Pre-order!

Plagued with guilt after her brother’s death, a grieving woman has a chance at a second chance.

Living in a haze of mistrust and tragedy, Chosen Shaw has closed herself off from everyone. Once known for her ability to see things that can help others, she’s now the woman who killed her brother.

Bend Ryder is the new sheriff in town and has a mess to clean up after the last one met an untimely death. He’s eating, sleeping and breathing a cold case involving a mysterious kidnapping, and is willing to do anything to solve the case—even if that includes looking outside of the box. Truthfully, he doesn’t believe Chosen has a “gift” but enlisting her help might be his only hope.

But, she’s left that world behind. Can he convince her to help?

Soon, they find themselves embroiled in another kidnapping.

The two find a solid connection, despite the pressures all around them. As trust and romance grow, the demons of the past start to build walls. They have a tight hold on her emotionally and physically. If she has any chance for a future with the man she loves, she must absolve herself from the guilt and let love heal her heart...and help solve a crime that has been a dark cloud over Second Chance.

Protecting His Second Chance is a story of grief, guilt, angst, redemption, and a happily ever after. Love is the ultimate healer.

SNEAK PEEK of an UNEDITED SNIPPET!

“It’s okay. This happens to all men at least once.”

Bend Ryder drew his hand away from his face and looked down at the naked woman curled up in his bed. She looked at him through a veil of thick eyelashes and her plump lips slowly eased into a grin. Farrah was new in town, visiting her aunt after her husband, Sheriff Jackson Mellough, met an untimely death.

Two days after his funeral, the town of Second Chance elected Bend to office. Since, he’d been busy cleaning up the mess Mellough had created.

Farrah walked her slender fingers down his abs and paused at the shiny silver buckle. The slight movement caused the sheet to slip, exposing her bare bottom. Sweat beaded his brow. “Maybe I can help solve the problem,” she purred.

She shifted to her knees, but Bend caught her shoulders in a gentle grip. Her chin snapped up and she nailed him with her brooding brown gaze. The tip of her tongue slid over her bottom lip as if to remind him what he was turning away.

A woman as beautiful and seductive as Farrah had never faced this problem, he guessed, even if she tried to pacify his ego by saying this happened all the time. A streak of disappointment sliced through him. Truthfully, he’d never had this…issue before tonight.

Colorful Language and Characters by Paty Jager

Years ago, when I started writing historical western romance, I came across a book that I found interesting. It is titled: Cowboy Lingo by Ramon F. Adams. It was the sub-title that caught my attention. "A Dictionary of the slack-jaw words and whangdoodle ways of the American west."

I thought, this is a book I need. And sure enough, not only have I used it to reference information from ranching, nicknames and figure of speech, it has given me hours of entertainment.

In the book it discusses how many a cowboy didn't use the usual one or two word words that are prominent today. They would put a whole string of words together to not only show their dismay or anger but to ridicule the person or critter who offended them.  "You flea-bitten sack of bones get your tail back over the fence." "If a house cat and a Jack rabbit were dumb enough to mate, you'd be the outcome."

I tend to use this philosophy with secondary characters who are older. Rather than have them spout curse words they have colorful expressions. These are mainly in my contemporary western romance and my mystery books. I find that by giving them these unusual phrases, it makes the reader remember them better than if they'd shouted a cuss word.  Mumbling "Corn mush and mosquito guts" catches the attention of the reader's attention better.

Cowboy Lingo has also helped me with words that are still used in ranching and it has a section on brands and earmarks. If a book is set in cattle country, that's always a good thing to know.

The chapters on cattle, riding equipment, horses and cattle also have helped me to make my characters knowledgeable and sound as if they do work on or own a ranch.

While this book was first published in 1936 it is still a very useful tool today. Especially for the writer of contemporary or historical western fiction.

You'll find a few uses of words I found in this book in my ebook box set or print anthology of the first three books in my Tumbling Creek Ranch series.  Yes, you read that correctly. You can purchase the first three books in one book in print if you prefer that over an ebook. If you would like a signed copy contact me through my website.

What is it About a Cowboy? by Rhonda Frankhouser

💕💕💕💕💕💕
Here's my sexy cowboy!
So, what is it about a cowboy that makes us swoon? We've created a whole romance genre around the allure of these Stetson wearing easy riders, so what draws us? Since it's almost Valentines Day, I thought I'd talk about the allure of the cowboy.
A little background to start. The cowboy has become one of the most recognizable images of the American West, though, in truth, cowboys, the Vaqueros, originated in Spain, then migrated to Mexico. As the courageous pioneers made their way west across North America, many new settlers mimicked these skilled animal herders as a way to survive the harsh, new land.
So what's so enticing about these dusty loners? Let's face it, they're job is not at all glamorous. They're on horseback for hours and days, weeks and even months, living off the land, sleeping on the cold ground and smelling to high heaven. They're most likely sore from riding, cranky from eating the same ole chow, and being exposed to the harsh winds and unrelenting sunshine. Not to mention predators looking for an easy target.
Reality aside, somewhere along the way, American culture decided cowboys represented honesty, integrity and raw sexuality. Think John Wayne, Bonanza and Gunsmoke, to name just a few. What we wouldn't give to earn the love of these rugged cowboys. I remember my mom fanning herself over Clint Eastwood in the Outlaw Josie Wales. There was just something about his stoic, sad personality and wide-rimmed hat that sent a message. "I'll be loyal to mine, forever."
Maybe its that simple? The steadfast character of the legendary cowboy is enticing because they seem so fearless. The idea that a man would fight for you until the end; love you fiercely and remain by your side, truly is a dream come true for many lonely lasses. Well, that's at least part of it. I know a good cowboy love story does it for me. That's probably why I love writing Western Romance.
What about you? What do you find irresistible about a cowboy?
Thanks for listening, Rhonda

Merry Christmas from Ruby's Ranch

by Rhonda Frankhouser
Contemporary Romance Writer

Fa-la-la-la-la, la la la la...

Can you believe it's already that time of year? It's my first year to spend the holidays in Georgia. My first Christmas away from family and friends in California. We're doing our best to get as cozy and Christmas-y as we can, but it all seems a little strange. Beautiful, but strange.
So, what do I do to get that loving feeling during the holidays, I fall back into my favorite characters and let them tell me their Christmas stories. My Ruby's Ranch characters to be more specific. These folks know how to party. When they're not solving mysteries and chasing sexy cowboys, I mean.

The heroine to Book 1 of the Ruby's Ranch Series, Return to Ruby's Ranch, is Ruby Lattrell. She's a no nonsense kind of gal. A house flipper who inherits the ranch after her crazy grandmother leaves the ranch and all that comes with it, to her favorite granddaughter.
The family history at the ranch is both jaded and beautiful in her mind. It's where she was born. Where she learned to ride and love the ranching life from her beloved father, John. It's where her mother disappeared without a trace. It's the place her father dragged her and her younger brother away from when he could no longer deal with the loss of his wife, Katherine.
Ruby's world changes when she pulls up in front of that ranch almost two decades later. Her grandmother had lost her mind, they'd said, and her mother was never found. So many unanswered questions haunted the place she'd always considered home. Questions for which she'd demand answers.
Billy MacCallister had waited years for Ruby to finally come home. When he saw her long legs sticking out of worn Justin boots on Granny Rube's porch, he was sure he was dreaming. But there she was, big as day, a mature, sexy version of that teenage girl he once knew. He was lost, or was he found? Destiny had finally come to call.
Ruby and Billy are two of my favorite couples in the Ruby's Ranch Series. Sassy, serious and sensual. They tackle real life together and find each other in the meantime.

Then came the answers to Katherine's mysterious disappearance as we go back in time one generation in Book 2 of the Ruby's Ranch Series - Escape from Ruby's Ranch. And no one would have ever believed.
Katherine was never meant to be a rancher, much to her pure-cowgirl mother's dismay. She was feminine, and dainty. A painter, a thinker, an entrepreneur at heart. She dreamed of getting away to live in the big city. To dine at the finest restaurants and attend the theatre. Her eyes ached for sophisticated sites and sounds, rather than the moo of a random steer.
And she almost had it, until John Lattrell, horse whisperer extraordinaire, two-stepped into her life. His sultry blue eyes and confident, easy ways sucked her right in and left her dangling dangerously between chasing her dreams or saddling up with this irresistible cowboy.
Unfortunately for Katherine, wicked obsession dictated her journey. In Escape we follow our heroine through a lifetime of intrigue as she fights toward her destiny. Even I was surprised.

Throughout the Ruby's Ranch story, Granny Rube aka Rube Adams, had shouldered the brunt. She had to be stronger, and wiser, and meaner than any other matriarch. But was she always so in charge? Book 3 of the Ruby's Ranch Series, Legacy of Ruby's Ranch, travels back yet another generation to where it all began.
Rube Gautier was born into a mystical dictatorship. One in a long line of matriarchs destined to lead an ancient tribe. She never wanted it. She only wants her own ranch. Her own life. Her own love. Not a life chosen by the elders.
When Rube lays eyes on war hero, turned rancher, MacKenzie Adams, her vision of the future comes into full view. He and a little cattle ranch in the Kern River Valley is all she needs in the world, but some traditions cannot be left behind. Legacy of Ruby's Ranch is due out in August of 2019.

Book 4 of the Ruby's Ranch Series, Revenge at Ruby's Ranch, brings us full circle back to the present. It will help explain the unexplainable and right all the wrongs suffered by this powerful line of matriarchs. The answers they find will shock even the most avid Ruby follower.
This brings me back to my thoughts of Christmas. Turns out hanging with the tight Ruby's Ranch family has made me feel like I'm part of a bigger community of beings. A community that includes all of you. A caring community who supports one another even though we may never meet in person.
I hope you and your loved ones have the Merriest Christmas ever, Happy Holidays and a fabulous New Year to all.  See you in 2019!

The Texas Ranger

The Texas Rangers

Hello everyone! If you’re ever in Waco, Texas be sure to make time to visit the Texas Ranger Hall of Fame and Museum. Plan to spend the afternoon…or maybe the day. The Rangers have a storied history and what better place is there to learn about them than in their own Museum and Hall of Fame? If you can’t make the trip, I’ll give you a small taste of the information you can find on their website to wet your appetite:

"They were men who could not be stampeded."

Frontier Battalion Co. "B" about 1880, ©2009, TRHFM

That's the way the late Col. Homer Garrison, Jr., long-time director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, once described the men who have worn the silver or gold star of the Texas Rangers, the oldest state law enforcement agency in North America. The Rangers have a heritage that began with the earliest settlements in Texas. They have been compared to other world-famous law enforcement agencies, the FBI, Scotland Yard, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Scores of books, from well-researched works of nonfiction to Wild West pulp novels to best-selling works of fiction, have been written about the Rangers. And numerous movies, radio shows and television shows have been inspired by the Rangers over the years.

The Rangers are part of the history of the Old West, and part of its mythology. Over the years, a distinct Ranger tradition has evolved. As former Ranger Capt. Bob Crowder once put it, "A Ranger is an officer who is able to handle any given situation without definite instructions from his commanding officer, or higher authority. This ability must be proven before a man becomes a Ranger."

Early Rangers were required to provide their own horses and equipment. They fought battles in which they were often outnumbered by as much as 50-to-1, so it was common for each man to carry multiple pistols, rifles and knives.

Like Texas, the early Texas Ranger had multicultural roots. Company rolls show that Anglos, Hispanics and American Indians served in all ranks from private to captain. These men freely borrowed from each others' experience and equipment. While most had been born in the American South, many hailed from Ireland, Germany, Scotland and England and spoke with their native accents. Early Rangers shot Spanish pistols, Tennessee and Kentucky rifles, carried Bowie knifes made in Sheffield England and rode swift Mexican ponies. One writer said that a Texas Ranger could "ride like a Mexican, trail like an Indian, shoot like a Tennesseean, and fight like the devil."

The force, organized by the governor, was created "for the purpose of protecting the frontier against marauding or thieving parties, and for the suppression of lawlessness and crime throughout the state." Ranger captains picked their own men, who had to furnish their own horses and could dress as they choose. They did not even have a standard badge.

Today, you’re more apt to see Texas Rangers dressed in a more modern look:

A Texan to the core, I learned very early in life to respect and admire the Rangers and to be proud of their history. They are very special people. Well worth taking the time to learn about.
