John Wayne trailblazed the way by Rhonda Lee Carver

Around 1725, the word cowboy appeared in English, but it didn't have the meaning as we know it today. The profession wasn't romanticized until much later, and we have the great John Wayne to thank for bringing a new definition to the cowboy lifestyle. Many attribute the movie Stagecoach to be the most crucial turning point. Wayne made "cowboys" a tabletop phenomenon. Way before Yellowstone became a hit, Wayne was a trailblazer in his own right. Even to this day, he stands as the most clearly defined cowboy around.

Do you have a favorite modern-day cowboy?

I've been working on the next book in my Cowboys of Sagebrush Rose series. Book 4 is releasing December 10th. The patriarch Sam Rose is much like John Wayne. Rough, tough, skilled, and fair.

 Here is a UNEDITED snippet.

Go back, Justice.

This is dangerous.

But she’d never been a very good listener.

She walked through the tall reeds that slapped against her boots, and the wind caressed her bare shoulders. The second Jinx saw her, his eyes widened slightly. Of course he’d be caught off guard. Not a single time had she approached him in all the months he’d worked at the ranch. She probably said two words to him the entire time. And now here she was, heading straight for him in the middle of a pasture.

He didn’t remove his gaze from her as she approached. Bits and pieces of hay were stuck in his hair and on his body. The waistband of his jeans settled low on his lean hips.

Seconds passed as their gazes locked.

Finally, she asked, “Why aren’t you out with the crew?”

She saw his throat bob as if his words were lost, but he found them. “I didn’t feel up to a night at Mav’s.”

She scanned the land to the front door of the farmhouse. Everything was quiet.

She met his gaze again. The day's anger and frustration had formed a crescendo inside her. And she did something she might regret later, but for now, she wanted to…

“There’s something between us,” she said.

He blinked. “I don’t think I’m following.”

“Are you attracted to me?” She held her chin steady.

One corner of his mouth lifted. “Ma’am—”

“Justice, please.”

“Okay. Justice, I don’t think…” his words trailed off with a clearing of his throat. “Yes, I am.”

What we can learn from book characters--by Rhonda Lee Carver

As an author, I'm always asked "Why should I read your book?"

This question used to stump me. I mean, I could give the obvious answers. One, a good romance never goes out of style. Two, you'll always get an HEA. Three, I'm asking for my fans to pick it up and take a risk on me as an author. Readers rock!

Over the last few years my answer to the question has morphed. At the beginning of my writing career, I played storylines safe. I kept them on the sidewalk and watched others speeding by on a wild chase on the country back road. Now my motto is, "Write what gives you goosebumps." And that's what I'm doing, and sometimes readers are like WTH?!?

Let me break this down.  I still want to make my readers happy. Because at the end they are the reason why I'm where I am. Yet, I'm willing to take risks with my characters. Don't follow the safe route. Allow the heart-breaking discussions to arise. Inject emotion into each book. Real life is messy and so should the storylines...in my opinion.

In my latest book, Chasing Liberty, releasing this month, I did venture out a bit. I had grappled with two ways to present this story. I won't give away spoilers, but I promise you, the story has a bit of my own heartbreak in it.

So, grab your copy.

Preorder here!

Wild Roses grow in unexpected places, and the sisters of Sagebrush Rose have a hankering for forbidden romance.

Sam Rose knew exactly what he was doing when he gave his daughters an ultimatum. Marry and calm their wild ways or he was writing them out of the will.

Full of vinegar and passion, Liberty will show her daddy! How dare he treat her like a child and meddle in her love life. She'd show him by marrying a ranch hand and Wyler Ranks is the perfect choice!

A surprise turns the fake marriage into something real.

The last thing Wyler wanted to do was fall in love with his wife. Yet here he was. He'd agreed to the "fake" marriage because he saw a chance at running his own ranch, but he didn't expect that his life would be turned upside down. He's never chased a woman before, but he's willing to chase Liberty and prove to her that he is the cowboy for her.

He will face danger to protect his new family.

Little do they know that flowers, and love, can grow in the least nurtured soil. Read this captivating novel of Liberty and Wyler's unplanned emotions and a gift neither saw coming.

EXCERPT!

Time?” His voice was a husky, broken tone produced from lack of sleep. They’d brought each other hours of pleasure and there wasn’t a spot on her body that he hadn’t explored.

Didn’t everyone have wild, passionate s%^ before they ended a relationship?

He flashed that grin—the grin that undid her like a ball of yarn.

Get it together, Liberty!

The “talk” had always been easier with her prior lovers. Of course, she’d never felt like this for anyone else.

The jar of hazelnut chocolate spread still sat with the lid off on the nightstand as a reminder how fun last night had been. She’d never think of dessert the same.

Focusing on the tiny white scar at center of his forehead, because that was the only spot on his body that was safe. She refused to fall victim to his confused expression.

Spit it out!

“A separation.” Whew! There. The words were out.

He remained silent.

Knocked Up by the Country Singer by Rhonda Lee Carver

Hi, y'all! I have a new pre-order. Knocked Up by the Country Singer will be released 4/30/2024. Grab your copy now so it scoots right into your ereader that day.

Pre-order here!

He left her at the altar to pursue his dreams of becoming a country music star. Ten years later, he returns home and faces his high school sweetheart who has a child with his brother. Turns out, she has a secret of her own.

Single mother, Dr. Milani Vance, has stayed focused on raising her daughter and growing her career as a pediatrician. Her past is in the rearview mirror until he strolls back into the small town, Whiskey Fork, and sends her life into a vortex.

Joseph Wayne has it all. Career, money, freedom. What more could he want?

He’s about to find out because an old flame burns anew. She has a secret that’ll turn his life upside down and spurring him into asking her to marry him. After all, a cowboy takes responsibility for what’s his. Unfortunately, he has a few fences to mend before Milani will find forgiveness.

She’s never stopped loving Joseph. Even after he’d broken her heart. Will she marry him and risk having her heart broken a second time? Or does a single mother, small town doctor have no place in a star’s life?

Excerpt:

Her eyes filled with tears. Pain mixed with disbelief and disgust twisted her expression.

He knew then she’d never forgive him. Not in a lifetime.

Her arms dropped to her sides and her hands were drawn into tight fists.

“You couldn’t have told me this a year ago? Why did you ask me to marry you? Why did you allow me to plan our wedding? To get my mom’s dress altered.” She touched the delicate lace.

He shoved his fingers through his hair, feeling a surge of contempt for himself for hurting her. How could he ever expect her to understand. “I love you, Milly. That won’t change.”

“Don’t you dare!” Her voice broke. “Don’t you dare say those words to me ever again. You lost the privilege the second you decided to leave me at the altar. Any man who loves a woman would never do what you’ve done. You have had plenty of opportunities to make this choice over the last year. This is selfish. You’re selfish! You never loved me. The man I loved never existed.”

“Don’t say that. I know this is messed up. I know you’re hurt. But you’re logical. You know this is for the best. Deep down I know you do. One day maybe we can—”

“No! There is no second chance or one day for us, Joseph,” she said eerily low.

He reached out to take her hand and she backed away.

“I understand, but I won’t change my mind. I’ve made it and, I’m sure.”

She blinked, repulsion burning in her eyes. “I’m glad you made this decision. I wouldn’t want to be married to someone like you. You don’t deserve me and your—” She caught herself.

“What?”

She gave her head a shake as if to dislodge her train of thought. “You don’t care about anyone but yourself. You think you only hurt me? What about our families? Our friends? Those who believed in us. You’re a jerk Joesph Wayne and I hope I never have to lay eyes on you again!”

Hell, what could he say?

Romancing Cupid by Jan Scarbrough

Cupid, ancient Roman god of love in all its varieties, the counterpart of the Greek god Eros and the equivalent of Amor in Latin poetry. According to myth, Cupid was the son of Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods, and Venus, the goddess of love. He often appeared as a winged infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows whose wounds inspired love or passion in his every victim. He was sometimes portrayed wearing armor like that of Mars, the god of war, perhaps to suggest ironic parallels between warfare and romance or to
 symbolize the invincibility of love.

“Cupid”. Encyclopedia Britannica, 12 Feb. 2020, https://www.britannica.com/topic/Cupid.

Wow! I love the idea of the invincibility of love. As psychic medium Blair Robertson says, love never dies.

Romance novels (and Hallmark Channel movies) are about the conflicts leading up to true love. We love reading about whatever keeps the hero and heroine apart, but we always know they will end up happily-ever-after (HEA). Let’s face it, life is not always HEA. Because of that, we often need to escape into the world of books.

In my book Liz: The Dawsons of Montana, the hero Chaz thinks: Novels gave the reader the opportunity to experience the possibility of other choices without making those choices. In a book, the reader lived a life outside his normal existence, helping him learn about himself—or herself, as the case might be.

I often let my characters say the truths that I’ve learned from a few years of living. Here are a few quotes from different books:

The big world beyond was scary.

“C’mon, Mel. Make an old man’s dream come true.”

“That’s just it, dreams don’t come true.” She sounded as if she had voiced an inner conviction.

“Sure, they do, Mel. If you make them come true.”

Stef had also said it was dumb to love a man who didn’t love you back.

“I guess a person can love more than once.”

“Yes, your dad and I are proof of that.” Liz gave a small laugh, her gaze faraway as if she envisioned someone standing across the floor. “And when that happens, you’re blessed.”

Have you learned anything about yourself from reading a romance novel?

Do you believe that love never dies?

What do cowboys want for Christmas? by Rhonda Lee Carver

What do cowboys want? That's a question that is asked a lot in my books. The staples are easy. A sturdy hat to block out the sun. Cowhide gloves. A work jacket that can handle the rough wear and tear of ranch life. Monogrammed belt buckles. Engraved horseshoes. Etched whiskey glasses...I could go on.

But what if you want to make a lasting impression on a cowboy?

Do they want a personalized calendar of the lady in their life? Sexy pictures?

Or...

Sleep under the stars with him. Learn how to wrangle like a real cowgirl (unless you're already one).

What would you do to impress a cowboy?

“I have to say, I sort of miss the truck bed days. Some of my fondest memories include Strawberry wine, the stars, and you.”
“What are we doing, Rip?” she whispered.
“Following fate’s lead?” He cocked a thick brow.
“I can’t do this.” She backed up a step. Needing to put some space between them before she did something very stupid, and very good.
“Can’t or won’t?” The husky tinge to his voice made her inner thighs tremble with yearning.

Rip Ryder’s Second Chance is a novel of high school sweethearts who reunite to rekindle a rare passion and confront the past.

As teens, Noelle Evelyn and Rip Ryder fell deeply in love. Their passion seemed to defy the odds of disapproving parents, youth and unforeseen obstacles…until high school graduation rolled around. One drunken night changed the future.

Years later, Noelle returns to Second Chance after the death of a friend only to face the lingering ghosts of her past. The memory of Rip has haunted her every day since they broke up. Her life might have moved forward, she’s now a single mom of a toddler, but her heart stays frozen in a time when love was all that mattered.

Noelle has carried a secret to protect others that will unravel. Will the demons of the past draw them together, or rip them apart again? Will an endless love endure the pain? Rip was willing to do anything to protect the only love he’d ever known, but can he save her?

Rip Ryder's Second Chance is the last installment of the series. This book will have you cheering for Noelle and Rip as they face demons from their past, and a secret that has lingered too long.

Rhonda always likes to connect with her readers.

Sneak peek by Rhonda Lee Carver

PreOrder Here!

Sneek Peek:

The best thing to do in the rain is to learn to dance wet.

Raven Ryder chuckled as he remembered how his mom would tell him this in her sing-song voice. Years had passed and he still didn’t enjoy getting wet.

He shifted atop his mare and the saddle creaked under his weight. Yellow Bee pawed at the mud following the distant rumble of thunder. “Yeah, I don’t like it either, girl.” He patted her neck which seemed to calm her some, but it wouldn’t last. The search and rescue horses were trained to handle the worst conditions, but the brewing storm unsettled even the best of them. Hell, the weather disconcerted Raven too. Stuck between a rock wall and a deep ravine into the rushing waters of Wildflower River, one wrong move could be fatal.

Dragging off his Stetson, he shook water off the rim then used his gloved fingers to wipe away the dampness from his forehead, little good it did though. At least the wool-lined jacket kept his torso dry but his jeans were heavy and soaked.

Reaching for his thermos, he unscrewed the lid and drained the last remaining dregs of coffee.

Great. Now he’d be wet and coffee deprived.

Placing the empty thermos back into the saddlebag, he scanned ahead at the uneven terrain on the most dangerous trail on Snowbleed Mountain. Devil’s Fork. They had about a ten-foot range of visibility with the fog settling in like a blanket. Dean’s horse, Juniper, gave a low whinny because she too sensed the danger. Raven and Dean were sitting ducks against both nature and the suspect who’d fled onto the mountain that morning. Usually, the Ryders could navigate the mountain without pause and find their target within hours, but any tracks or clues had been washed away by the flowing water and debris that had created a stream on the bumpy path.

The only lead came from a witness who had been hiking early that morning and spotted a suspicious man wearing all black heading up on the mountain. Later, Raven found a partial track near Devil’s Fork, the single one that had survived the torrential downpour.

Every search and rescue mission was considered important, but this particular one hit close to home. They wanted to catch the bastard who attacked Farrah outside of her apartment late last night. They also believed he’d attacked Shelby outside of Crew and Brew last month. Luckily, both women had successfully fought the assailant off, but they needed to bring the perpetrator in to give Second Chance some peace of mind.

Bend had several suspects who checked out and had solid alibis so that put him back to square one in the investigation.

Today was the closest they’d been to catching the suspect so abandoning the search didn’t seem plausible.

Careful or you'll end up in my next novel - by Jan Scarbrough

You may have heard that saying. It sometimes appears on T-shirts. Do you ever wonder if writers put people they know into their novels?

I don’t think I’ve actually put a real person into my books. But my life has influenced everything I write. Being a single mother is one of my themes, because I’ve been there. Now I write “seasoned romance” and “second chance” books because I’ve been there too. I can relate to many emotions, because over the years I’ve had them. I’m sure there’s a little bit of me in everything I write.

However, most of my books come from my imagination. Let’s face it, I’ve never been a jockey, a bull rider, a cowboy, or a horse trainer. I’ve shot a gun only once at a firing range. It’s hard for me to think up bad things to happen to my characters, because I don’t like bad things.

I do sometimes use my experiences in a book. Take this partial scene from Kentucky Cowboy, for example. (Judd is the hero, Mandy is the heroine, and Georgia is Mandy’s niece.)

Ten minutes later, outside of town on a back-country road, Mandy screamed, “Stop the truck!”

Judd’s heart spiked as he swerved to the right, tires squealing. He braked hard. The front and back tires lurched to a stop in the grassy slope by the side of the road.

Mandy threw open the passenger side door and disappeared around the back of the vehicle.

Georgia scrambled out behind her.

He was shaken. “What’s going on?”

“We’ve got to save them!” the little girl shouted over her shoulder.

He threw open his door and stepped down from the cab just in time to see several ducklings scurrying into the underbrush on the other side of the road. Mandy and Georgia squatted over a limp mother mallard lying on the opposite shoulder of the two-lane highway. After looking both ways, he crossed the pavement.

“She’s dead,” Judd said.

Mandy climbed to her feet. “We know.”

“It’s so sad,” Georgia wailed. “They were just crossing the road in a line when that stupid car hit them.”

Although he had noticed the passing car, he had been looking down the road and had missed seeing the tragic hit and run. Mandy and Georgia had witnessed everything.

“Do you have a box in the truck?” Mandy glanced toward the brush where the ducks had disappeared. He recognized that determined look in her eyes. She was putting on her game face, readying for action.

“No, but I have a duffle bag.”

“Get it. Georgia and I are going to catch those babies.” Mandy turned away from him and plunged into the thicket. Georgia followed without hesitation.

Were they crazy? Judd ran back across the highway, opened his topper, and dug around in the truck bed for his duffle bag. By the time he’d emptied all his equipment—a handmade bull rope, riding gloves, and leather chaps—Mandy and Georgia had vanished.

This is suicide. He crossed the road again, dodging a fast-moving truck. “Mandy, this is dangerous.”

“No more so than riding bulls.”

She had him there.

Georgia poked her head out of the brush. “We need your help.”

Judd looked at the serious expression on Georgia’s sweet face. He eyed the tangle of scrub trees and brambles. Oh, heck. “I’ll help.” He ducked under a limb and picked his way slowly through the underbrush.

The first thing he noticed was that it was dangerous. Georgia’s little legs were already scratched and bleeding. He had the protection of jeans and boots, but Mandy and Georgia were wearing sandals.

“I caught one.” Mandy appeared with a small scrap of tan fluff cupped in her hands. She looked pleased with herself. A strand of hair had slipped from her once-proper ponytail.

Peep, peep, peep.

Judd opened the mouth of the bag and Mandy slid one little bird inside.

“There are eight of them.”

Her eyes were bright. Damn, she was determined. And beautiful.

“What do you want me to do?”

She peered at him. “Will you hold the bag?”

“Sure.”

He waited and watched, sweat pouring down his back, soaking his shirt. It was hot and humid, another sweltering Kentucky summer evening.

Georgia came up to him holding another baby. “This makes two.”

The ducklings might be tiny, but they were quick wild creatures that were terrified of humans, even humans wanting to help. The minutes ticked by as Mandy and Georgia tried to corner the frightened ducklings. Slowly, the count in the bag rose to three, four, and then five.

Saving eight ducklings and taking them to a wildlife rescue happened to my daughter and me. Sadly, there wasn’t a hunky bull rider with us.

What do I like on my hot dog? by Rhonda Lee Carver

Hi, y'all! I CANNOT believe we're halfway through March already. Where has the month gone? This year? I am excited that we're one month closer to warmer weather. Spring is such a wonderful, renewing time for every living thing. The trees and flowers blossom. Plants grow. Fur babies are born. Each morning brings with it a scent that is unexplainable...the scent of spring.

I'm always getting questions from readers. Mostly they relate to my books, and sometimes they are questions that relate to me personally.  I've decided to answer a few of them here. Be prepared, some will bring a laugh...

What is your favorite alcoholic drink?

I'm not a big drinker. I grew out of that stage years ago, but at times I do enjoy a cocktail. My fave is a lime margarita...not mango, peach, raspberry...lime. With a ring of salt, not sugar.

In some of your videos you're wearing glasses. Are they prescriptions?

No. Actually, I can see perfectly, except for up close. Age has done a number on me, and I need readers.

Mustard or Ketchup on your hot dog?

I haven't eaten a hot dog in a very long time. I guess if I had to choose, I'd go with mustard. The only thing I eat ketchup with is fries.

If you were reincarnated, what would you come back as?

That's an easy decision. One of my characters :)

Would you choose three million dollars or a vacation house on the beach?

That is a hard one. I'd have to flip a coin. I chose heads for the money, and it came up tails.

Lace or satin?

There's a time and place for both.

Name some pet peeve of yours.

Don't pretend to be my friend then not have friend qualities. If I'm your friend I have your back, through thick and thin. I put a lot of stock in good friendships and they're hard to find these days.

I have zero tolerance for someone taking something I said, jumbling it sideways to make me look bad, then that person playing innocent. Nope, can't do that. Those who know me realize I'm one to say it straight.

NOW ONTO THE BEST STUFF...

I have FOUR, yes FOUR, preorders right now and you don't want to miss these.
