RIDERS ON THE STORM by THE DOORS

Green Valley, Arizona

May 4, 1882

Pacing on the front porch of the jailhouse, Rhoda glanced at her pocket watch.

It was now twenty minutes after five.

Where were Luke, Adam, and Nick?

She paced for another minute before sighing.

They had given her no choice.

She was going to have to leave without them.

She had no qualms about that.

She was very much a lone wolf.

Just as she was making her way down the wooden steps of the porch towards her horse, Adam pulled up in a wagon, Nick and Luke riding right behind him on horses.

Her gaze suddenly focused on Linda sitting beside Nick and Jolene sitting in the back of the wagon beside several bags.

Glaring up at them, she asked, “What in the hell are you two doing here?” She then glared up at Adam, Nick, and Luke and exclaimed, “They’d better not be coming with us! Is that why you were late? Did you have to wait for them to pack?” she sarcastically asked. She then once again glared up at Linda and Jolene and sarcastically asked, “Did you have trouble deciding which designer gowns to pack?” And then, she furiously exclaimed, “You two need to go home right this very minute!”

“I’m not going anywhere, Rhoda,” Jolene simply said. And then, she added, “Except to Mexico.”

“There are more guns than designer gowns in those bags, Rhoda,” Linda simply said.

Once again glaring up at Nick and Adam, Rhoda furiously exclaimed, “Tell your wives to go home! Now!”

Without hesitation, Nick said, “We would if we could, Rhoda. But they have a mind of their own. They – especially Jolene – wear the pants in the family.”

“They are coming with us, Rhoda,” Adam solemnly said.

When Rhoda glared up at him, Luke simply asked, “Are we going to waste more time arguing about Jolene and Linda coming with us or are we going to get going, Rhoda?”

Rhoda was about to put up more of a fight when Lilly suddenly arrived on horseback.

Jolene just stared intently at her for a long moment before finally asking, “What is she doing here?”

Without hesitation, Lilly simply pointed out, “She can speak for herself. Rhoda asked me to go to Mexico with you. I didn’t know that you and Linda were going, Jolene.”

Luke just stared intently down at Rhoda for a long moment before finally asking, “Why did you ask Lilly to come with us, Rhoda? What is her purpose?”

Without hesitation, Lilly said, “I wondered that, too. I wondered if I was expected to play whore to Aloysius Ryan.”

Without hesitation, Luke asked, “Are you?”

Lilly and Rhoda just stared intently at each other for a long moment before Lilly finally said, “Yes.”

Rhoda just continued to stare intently at Lilly for another long moment before finally saying, “Let’s get going. We have a very long ride ahead of us.”

SNAKE TASTES LIKE CHICKEN

Tucson, Arizona

Rhoda watched as Linda just stared intently down at the contents on her plate.

Grimacing, Linda said, “This- This is snake.”

“Eat it,” Rhoda said. “It – and the baked beans – are good protein.”

Pointing to the snake meat on Linda’s plate, Jolene said, “You’ll like
it, Linda. It tastes like chicken.”

Suddenly snorting, Lilly asked, “Are people still telling that lie?
It’s snake. It tastes like snake.”

Still grimacing, Linda said, “I’ll pass on the snake and just eat the
baked beans.”

Without hesitation, Rhoda said, “You need to eat the snake meat, too,
Linda. We may not get a good meal until we’re safely back in Green
Valley. I can’t have you fainting on me because you refuse to eat
snake meat.” Sighing, she then said, “You should never have come on
this trip. You’re nothing but a fragile flower.”

Suddenly glaring at Rhoda, Linda exclaimed, “I am no fragile flower,
Rhoda! I have been with more men than I can count, been married 13 times,
and have the scars to show for it! Don’t ever call me a fragile flower again!”

She then took a bite of the snake meat on her plate.

Rhoda just stared incredulously at Linda while Adam lovingly took his
wife’s hand in his.

Once again snorting, Lilly sarcastically exclaimed, “Nice going, Mother!”

Looking at Lilly, Rhoda pointed out, “I am neither your mother nor
your stepmother, Lilly.”

Suddenly glaring at Rhoda, Lilly furiously pointed out, “You
definitely saw to that when you assassinated my father!”

Not wanting to argue with Lilly over what had happened with her father
anymore, Rhoda ate her supper.

It was very hard to ignore Lilly’s furious glare and Luke’s very intense stare.

But she did.
