THE SWAN releases this week!!

By Kristy McCaffrey

I'm excited to share that the next Wings of the West book is almost here. The Swan is Book 11 but it can definitely be read as a standalone. This one features Anna Ryan, the eldest daughter of Logan and Claire from The Dove. She and Malcolm Hardy, her love interest, appeared in the novella The Songbird.

I started with the idea - what if The Magnificent Seven were women?

Dr. Anna Ryan - newly arrived to Conleyville in the Chickasaw Nation to assist with a surgery on a little girl

Blanche Threadgill - owner of the Threadgill Orphanage

Jane McDougal - a no-nonsense older woman who knows her way around a gun

Roberta Sturgeon - a black lawyer with retribution on her mind

Dolores Walker - Anna's cousin who is harboring a secret

Drusilla Perez - an elderly Chickasaw healer

Isabel Lawson - a young Chickasaw woman who must learn to stand up for herself

Together they'll face Webb Delmont, a man trying to take over their town. And along the way, Anna must convince Malcolm they belong together, because Malcolm's past is irrevocably tied to Delmont.

Twin Territories
November 1899

Dr. Anna Ryan has been spurned by the Dallas medical community for the simple reason of being a woman. Wanting more than a rural practice alongside her mother, also a doctor, Anna accepts an invitation from a mentor to join a private hospital for disabled children in Oklahoma City. But when she falls in with a band of women attempting to protect the rights of Chickasaw orphans, she’ll need more than her medical training to survive.

Malcolm Hardy has skirted the line between lawlessness and justice since escaping the mean streak of his father and his no-good half-siblings a decade ago. In Oklahoma Territory he created enough distance from his family name to find a quiet purpose to his days. But then Anna Ryan walks back into his life, and his hard-won peace is in jeopardy.

The last time Malcolm saw Anna, she had been a determined girl he couldn’t help but admire. Now she was a compelling woman searching for answers that could lead straight to him. But one thing was clear—Anna’s life path was on a trajectory for the remarkable while Malcolm’s was not. Surrendering to temptation would only end in heartbreak.

The Swan is an emotional story of a woman finding her true calling and a hero moving forward after a difficult past. It has light steam and seven women standing up for what’s right.

An excerpt from The Swan

“Did you learn why Dr. Richardson asked you here?” Malcolm asked.

“Yes,” Anna replied. “A necessary surgery is needed for a young girl at the orphanage, and she needs me to assist.”

“Is it dangerous?”

“I suppose all surgeries carry an element of risk, but Dr. Richardson is quite competent.”

“And so are you, I’m certain.”

Anna’s face warmed from the compliment.

“Can I pay you for your troubles?” he added.

She gave a slight shake of her head, feeling as if Malcolm were slipping from her reach once again.

“I’ll be here for a few more days,” she said in a rush. “Perhaps you could show me around town.”

“You mean a tour?”

She shrugged, trying to appear casual. “Why not? The mountains look pretty from here. Unless of course there’s a sweetheart who’s missing you.”

“No. There’s no one who misses me.”

The tone of his voice indicated a level of loneliness that caught Anna off guard. Malcolm had been estranged from his family for some time, and if the interaction with his pa was any indication, the two of them weren’t about to have a warm reconciliation.

How easily she had taken for granted her own family ties, a bone-deep knowing that her folks and extended family would always be there for her.

She met Malcolm’s gaze head on. “I’ve missed you.”

And with that she turned and left.

Sophie Ryan’s dream of working for a newspaper has come true. Accompanied by her cousin, Lucas Blackmore, a newly appointed U.S. Deputy Marshal, she arrives in Jerome, one of the richest mining towns in America. And one of the most remote. Although she’s been hired to report for the Jerome Mining News on education and cultural issues, she soon finds herself immersed in something more serious when she finds an enigmatic injured man in the Black Hills claiming to be an ornithologist.

U.S. Deputy Marshal Benton McKay is undercover tracking the notorious train robbing Weaver gang, and the trail ends in Jerome. When he’s injured in the Black Hills and found by a determined and beautiful young woman, he must gain her trust to keep his identity a secret. But keeping her out of trouble proves a challenge, especially with her cousin assigned to assist him. As they track down the band of outlaws, another agenda emerges—the renegades are searching for lost gold believed to have been left behind by the Spanish Conquistadors. And Sophie Ryan is determined to report on it.

Sophie pulled free. “What are you doing here?” she whispered.

“I could ask you the same, but I don’t have time.”

McKay went to the barn door as Bromley’s light disappeared around the house. He stepped into the storm, searching the ground for Xander’s path. It became futile quickly, the ground a muddy slop. And he couldn’t keep lurking around the Bromley house. The man might see him.

When he stopped abruptly, Sophie slammed into his backside. He grabbed her shoulders before she fell, her duster slick with rain. “We need to go,” he said.

Grabbing her hand, he dragged her behind him, not stopping until they got to her horse.

“Were you following me?” she demanded.

He ignored her, grabbing her waist and hoisting her onto Roger. He took the horse’s reins from her.

“I can ride on my own,” Sophie said loudly above the din of rain.

McKay walked Roger to his own horse. Once mounted, he continued to hold Roger’s reins, not wanting to lose Sophie in the storm. It was slow going, but he finally got them to the livery where they left the animals for the night. Then McKay took her hand again and led her to his hotel.

“Where are we going?” Her voice was exasperated.

“We need privacy,” he said, taking a back way, entering the Connor Hotel through a rear entrance.

When the way was clear of employees, they went through the kitchen and took the stairs. He unlocked his door but when he stepped inside, Sophie refused.

“I’m not going into your room,” she whispered. She was dripping water all over the carpeted floor.

“Now’s not the time to play hard to get, Sophie.”

He pulled her inside and shut the door.

Nighthawks – The Nightjar Family

 By Kristy McCaffrey

Nighthawks are a member of the nightjar family, with large eyes, brown and gray coloring, and resemble swallow-like birds, sailing and diving as they fly. They're misnamed as they’re neither nocturnal—they’re active at dawn and dusk—nor are they closely related to hawks.

They have long pointed wings and medium-long tails, but the most striking feature is their small bill, which is barely visible at the tip of their mouth. They feed by flying with their mouth open, swallowing prey whole, and feed on thousands of insects every night.

They were called goatsuckers because of the myth that they used their wide mouths to suckle goats directly from the udders, drinking the milk to sustain themselves. It was thought the goat would stop producing milk and go blind.

Fossils of nighthawks have been found as far back as 400,000 years ago during the late Pleistocene. A group of nighthawks is called a kettle.

The Bottled in Bond Act of 1897

By Kristy McCaffrey

Distilled spirits, especially whiskey, helped to shape the Old West. Whiskey’s ingredients were easy to produce, namely corn, wheat, barley, and rye, and as its value rose it became a popular trade item.

As demand increased, some businessmen doctored their supplies with ingredients such as tobacco juice, kerosene, and grain alcohol, leading to the term “rotgut” when describing the liquor. This “rectified” whiskey required no aging and was consumed immediately following production, as opposed to straight whiskey which was aged in new oak barrels for a minimum of two years.

In towns such as Tombstone, Arizona, popular whiskey drinks included Whiskey Cocktails, Whiskey Slings, Whiskey Punches, Rock and Rye, and Stone Fences.

But as the nineteenth century was ending, change was afoot. The Bottled in Bond Act was enacted in 1897 to regulate the sale of whiskey. The legal regulation is part of the U. S. government’s Standards of Identity for Distilled Spirits. It stipulates that the liquor must be the product of one distillation season (January-June or July- December) by one distiller at one distillery. It must be aged in a federally bonded warehouse under U.S. supervision for at least four years and bottled at 100 proof/50% alcohol by volume. Only spirits produced in the U.S. may be designated as bonded.

Some consumers consider this to be an endorsement of quality, but some producers of whiskey believe the regulation to be archaic today. But the goal was to insure a higher quality of whiskey to the consumer.

Jerome, Arizona

By Kristy McCaffrey

Happy 2024! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with your family and friends. This year brings a new addition to my Wings of the West series. THE NIGHTHAWK is Book Ten and will be released July 17, 2024. You can pre-order a digital copy today. The story takes place in Jerome, Arizona Territory, in 1899. It’s a lovely little town with great views of the red rocks of Sedona in the distance.

Today Jerome is known for its art scene and wineries, but in the 1800’s it was called the “Wickedest Town in the West.” Built on Cleopatra Hill, it sat on a vast deposit of copper.

Jerome 1897

Prehistoric Native Americans were the first miners. Later, the Spaniards came seeking gold, followed by an influx of Americans, Mexicans, Croatians, Irish, Italians, and Chinese. It was a raucous town filled with miners, freighters, gamblers, bootleggers, saloons, prostitutes, and preachers. The copper deposits discovered here are among some of the richest ever found.

A Newsletter Freebie! ~ Raine Rochelle

Hello,

If we’ve met before it may be that you’re a reader of my latest series, The Billionaires of Brightside Ranch, and, if so, I hope you enjoyed it and left me a review. I’m currently working on the follow-on series, The Johnsons of Junova, and am writing the second book in the series, Heartbeat.

However, I’m aware that you may have never heard of me or my books, so I’d like to introduce you to my FREE BOOK which you can get simply by signing up to my newsletter HERE. Don’t worry; if you find it’s not for you then you can easily unsubscribe—no hard feelings.

The Father, The Son and the Bottle of Rum is a standalone novella, telling a story of healing and forgiveness. It also has a smattering of humour, as do all my stories—reading is fun, after all! I hope you’ll give it a chance.

Here’s a little about it:

The wrong kind of spirit causes a massive headache for the Lamberts of Charity Creek

The Father

John Lambert, pastor and founding member of the church of Charity Creek is a proud man; well-respected by his parishioners. But he hides a dark secret.

The Son

Joe Lambert is a successful carpenter with his own business. When his mother asks him to come home to help mend the church roof he doesn’t hesitate. But should he?

The Bottle of Rum

Homeless and destitute, Leah Bailey seeks shelter from a storm in the church of her hometown, Charity Creek. Warmed only by a couple of blankets, some hassocks and the dregs of a bottle of rum, she curls in the corner while the storm rages on. When a tree crashes through the roof of the building she escapes injury, but not the wrath of the pastor who finds her.

Just why is the old man so bitter? And what is the underlying problem between him and Joe?

Will Leah be the catalyst that heals father and son, or will she just widen their rift?

I hope you enjoy it!

Arizona Territory
1899

Sarah Ryan grew up in Texas digging up animal bones and potsherds, but she always dreamed of searching for the extraordinary dinosaur fossils in the American West. When a wealthy benefactress gives her the opportunity to join the team of esteemed paleontologist Dr. Allan Brenner, she eagerly accepts. But when she arrives in the wild and wooly town of Holbrook, Arizona Territory, ready to start digging, she’s faced with the very real obstacle of being a female in a world dominated by men.

Dr. Jack Brenner is looking for his father who disappeared into the Painted Desert two months ago. Mounting an expedition to find him, Jack is suddenly saddled with Sarah Ryan, a young paleontology student hired as an intern to his father. When Jack’s guide refuses to let Sarah accompany them into the wilderness without a chaperone—and a colleague threatens her—he finds himself in a pretend marriage to protect the determined woman whose passion for paleontology was something he once possessed. But he has bigger problems than his beautiful new wife—his father is pursuing a controversial theory about the origin of birds, and it’s attracted the attention of men who would rather destroy evidence than excavate it.

Sarah is the daughter of Logan and Claire from THE DOVE.

Sarah hadn’t expected Dr. Brenner to be so young. Or tall, his stance beneath his hat and duster exuding self-assurance. She had never met the esteemed paleontologist in person, but he was … different than she had imagined. Her smile slipped a bit. Could he possibly have written all those papers in the last four or five years he was credited with? He appeared to be around thirty years old, and that would mean he’d been doing extensive field work while earning his doctorate. It stretched credibility.

Dr. Brenner was looking at her as if he didn’t know who she was. Well, obviously he didn’t, since they had never met, but it appeared he hadn’t been expecting her.

“Did you get the letter from Mrs. Parks?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“Oh, good. Then you knew I was coming.” He was here, so he was awaiting someone. She relaxed a little. Traveling alone from Boston had a been a bit nerve-wracking, but she had kept reminding herself that she was made of sterner stock than most. She was a Ryan after all. A daughter and niece of the well-known Texas Ryans, Blackmores, and Walkers.

“You’re a woman,” Dr. Brenner stated, his brows furrowed in a way that reminded her of her favorite horse, Chip, when he wanted another carrot, but she wouldn’t give him one.

“Last time I looked,” she replied cheerfully. She’d been given the break of a lifetime when Mrs. Parks had hired her for this dig. She wasn’t going to let anything get her down.

When consternation remained on his quite-handsome face, she added, “Is that a problem?”

“I was told to meet an S. Ryan. I’d assumed you were ….”

When he paused, she waited, but when he didn’t finish the sentence, it became clear what he was going to say. “A man,” she said.

He sighed and looked away. “Yes.”

Coelophysis: Dinosaur of the Old West

By Kristy McCaffrey

When you think of dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex comes to mind but there were many types of theropod that came before it. Coelophysis was a small bipedal carnivore and was one of the earliest dinosaurs to walk the earth. It was also an ancestor of T. rex.

Coelophysis, a small dinosaur from the
Triassic Period (considered to be
the Dawn of the Dinosaurs)

Dinosaurs lived during the Mesozoic Era (sometimes called “the Age of Reptiles”), which spanned from 252 million years ago to 66 million years ago. It was comprised of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous Periods. Early dinosaurs (such as Coelophysis) emerged in the Triassic, but they were quite small. Giants such as T. rex and enormous sauropods such as Brontosaurus and Diplodocus lived during the late Jurassic and Cretaceous.

A Coelophysis fossil at the
Museum of Northern Arizona

In 1889, Edward Drinker Cope was the first to identify and name Coelophysis. The first remains were found by David Baldwin, an amateur fossil collector working for Cope, in 1881 in northwestern New Mexico. These first finds were too poorly preserved to give a full picture of the dinosaur, but in 1947 a massive graveyard of fossils was found in New Mexico containing many well-preserved and fully articulated specimens.

It is theorized that Coelophysis may have
run in packs, although no direct
evidence supports this

There is wide consensus today that birds descended from theropods such as Coelophysis. (T. rex has more in common with the modern-day chicken than to a crocodile.) Both birds and theropods shared wishbones, likely incubated their eggs, had hollow bones, and were covered in feathers.

In my upcoming book, THE CANARY, Dr. Jack Brenner and Sarah Ryan are on the hunt in the Arizona desert for Jack’s father, the esteemed paleontologist Dr. Allan Brenner. And Allan is on the hunt for Coelophysis.

Read an excerpt

Jack and Sarah have entered a marriage of convenience for various reasons, one being her difficult relationship with one of her professors, Dr. Everett Pierce. Isaac is a Comanche friend and paleontology assistant of Jack’s father.

“And why are you here, Dr. Pierce?” Sarah asked, sitting up straight and looking him in the eye. Either she was a very good actress, or her animosity was real. Jack at least had to concede that it was likely the latter.

“I’ve been contracted to explore the area,” he said.

“By whom?” Isaac cut in.

“Roderick Melton.”

That Pierce was still tied to Melton shouldn’t have surprised Jack, but it did, despite that it was no secret Pierce’s father pulled strings wherever he could for his son. It had been a topic of gossip in paleontological circles that the elder Pierce had been trying to establish business relations with Roderick Melton. And then there’d been the business with Betsy. Unbeknownst to Jack, he’d been in a romantic triangle with her and Pierce, and while he blamed Pierce wholeheartedly for being an unethical ass, Betsy had decisively left Jack despite that he’d protected her from possibly going to jail, which probably wouldn’t have happened considering Roderick’s wealth.

But Pierce had never won Betsy’s hand—she had later married someone else—and it had been the one bright spot in an otherwise painful period of Jack’s life.

He kept his reaction to himself by raising his glass—the whiskey this time and not the beer—and nursing a long drink.

Isaac folded his hands together on the table. “Selling out, are you?”

“Don’t give me the holier than thou speech,” Pierce replied with a smirk. “We’re all in it for the money. Private collectors have as much right to house collections as museums.”

“At least we know now for certain,” Isaac said.

Pierce raised a brow. “What’s that?”

“You have zero ethics.”

Unethical ass echoed in Jack’s head.

“Ethics don’t pay the bills,” Everett said. “And what about Allan Brenner? Who’s paying his bills?”

Jack and Isaac didn’t respond, so Sarah filled the empty space. “Yale University,” she said. “And Helen Parks, I would assume.”

“Yes, of course,” Pierce said conversationally, leaning forward. “And she’s the one who hired you, right Sarah?”

Jack didn’t like the proprietary tone in Pierce’s voice as he said her first name.

“You know,” Pierce continued. “If you’d wanted a dig, you could have come to me. I could’ve introduced you to Melton.”

“Like you did with Jane?” she countered.

Pierce’s eyes narrowed and he swallowed nervously, his Adam’s apple bobbing noticeably. “Jane quit school, a reminder that women really don’t have what it takes to be out here.”

“I’ve heard that could be said of some men, as well.” Sarah offered a polite smile while sipping her drink.

Jack tried not to laugh, but his lips twitched anyway.

Pierce rose to his feet. “I look forward to seeing you in class in the fall, Mrs. Brenner. I’m sure you’ll have much to share with the other students after your summer here.” He adjusted his jacket. “Gentlemen. I expect I’ll see you out there.”

“Not if I can help it,” Jack said plainly.

Pierce snatched the bottle of whiskey, clearly unwilling to leave the remainder with them. “Allan Brenner thinks he’s some sort of god out here. He’s not.

“I get it now,” Isaac said with a knowing nod. “You’re here to outshine him. How exactly do you propose to do that?”

“He’s pinned so many of his theories on Coelophysis,” Pierce said, “but he’s yet to find a full skeleton. And when I find one, I’ll debunk every hypothesis he’s put forward.”

We've Got Your Yellowstone

By Kristy McCaffrey

If you enjoy the western television series "Yellowstone" starring Kevin Costner, then please check out this promo of contemporary cowboy romance books.

Includes my novella, BLUE SAGE.

Braden Delaney has taken over the family cattle business after the death of his father, but faced with difficult financial decisions, he contemplates selling a portion of the massive Delaney ranch holdings known as Whisper Rock. Archaeologist Audrey Driggs has come to the remote wilderness of Northern Arizona for clues to a life-altering experience from her childhood. Together, they’ll uncover a long-lost secret.

Blue Sage Excerpt

Northern Arizona
September

The damned calf was stuck in the brambles again.

Braden Delaney swung down from his horse, his spurs jangling, and approached the mewling youngster. The calf thrashed in a mess of bushes beneath a stately juniper tree with shredded, red-colored bark. It reminded Braden of pulled-pork barbecue. It was on the menu tonight if Lewis, wrangler and cook during roundups, had been telling the truth this morning before the five of them had headed out.

It was late in the day and Braden’s stomach rumbled in response.

He’d take care of this problem and then head back to base camp—two airstream trailers and a horse trailer with a built-in bunk for Braden.

Braden knocked the brim of his Stetson up a notch and went to work prying the animal from the tangled jumble of branches. His gloved hands made fast work of the situation, and before long he’d set the calf on all fours. The animal took off at a lope, headed toward a band of larger cows, one of whom was likely his mama.

“You’re welcome,” Braden uttered under his breath.

It was the third rescue he’d performed on the calf in the past two days. The contrary little beast had a knack for wandering and getting into untenable predicaments. He should just usher it to the makeshift corral a few miles to the southeast, but Braden wasn’t quite ready to bring in this cluster of cattle, and he didn’t want to separate the calf from its mother.

Billy Lasco, his range foreman, would be up in a few days with two large semi-trucks to collect the cattle they’d gathered and transport them to the Delaney Ranch fifty miles to the south. Braden would guide the wayward calf and his mama into camp then. His current plan was to simply flush the cows and steers hiding out in the rocky hillside into the open plain below.

As he returned to his horse, a scream and a crash spun him around.

Had a steer just rolled down the slope? Braden circled, searching for an injured critter.

But it was no animal.

A woman lay on her back, grimacing.

Braden moved quickly to her side. “Are you all right, miss?”

She pushed to sit, leaves and sticks in her brown hair, askew in a haphazard ponytail. She wore trail pants, hiking boots and an ivory t-shirt. His eyes jerked back to the shirt, not sure he’d read correctly the word printed on it. Yep, he had. BOOBIES covered the spot where those very things resided, round and nicely shaped. Then he saw the image above the word—two birds with blue feet. Blue-footed boobies. Despite the dire situation, a smile tugged at his mouth.

Dill, Bread and Butter, Cornichons, Sour, Kosher, Gherkins, Garlic...there are so many to choose from. You can eat them on burgers, chicken, meat loaf, but I like them on fried rice too.

2. Pizza

The bigger the better.

3. Apples

Did you know that there are more than 7,500 varieties? I feel like I need to try each and every one.

4. Oranges

5. Butts

I had to throw that in there because I know you all were thinking it. We all want a big, rounded bottom. Here are some women who have "popular" booties (can't promise they're all natural).

JLO

Kim Kardashian

Sofia Vergara

Nicki Minaj

Iggy Azalea

Beyonce

BLURB:
A single father is looking for a nanny, but what he gets is an old flame.

Whiskey Ryder spends most of his time on the back of a horse on a mountain. Whether it’s on a search and rescue mission, or on the Ryde Hard Ranch working the land with his brothers. He’s all about being a cowboy…and a single father of a preteen who woke up one morning hating him. He’s been told it’s a normal phase for all kids, but he’s like a parenting fish out of water. He’s a millisecond away from chewing leather but his stunning first love comes back to town and, to his relief, has a way with his daughter...and his heart.

They are better together than whiskey and cola but claiming a second chance won’t be easy because someone sees her as a threat and wants her to leave town…dead or alive.

Codee Fields finds herself helping an old friend—old friend as in the cowboy who was her first love, first kiss, first everything. She’s had a couple of failed relationships, but Whiskey is “the one who got away”. Her priority is to solve the mystery of her sister’s death now that she knows the truth.

Whiskey will protect her at all costs, but will it be enough for a second chance at romance? Or will tragedy strike and everything he’s wanted disappear?

If small town romances with lots of emotion and adventures in the mountains, and sweltering chemistry between the lead characters, are what you crave then grab books by Rhonda Lee Carver.

EXCERPT:

“Hell, there are a lot of people I thought I knew and I was way off mark.” He opened the bottom drawer to the desk and took out the small envelope that had been stored there for years. He set it in front of her, watching realization cover over her expression. “I’ve kept it all these years. It belongs to you.”

Did her eyes become misty? He wasn’t sure because she blinked and the moisture was gone.

“I sent it back to you,” she said softly.

“What the hell will I do with it? I’ve thought about pawning the diamond for a couple of bucks but can’t seem to find the motivation. Maybe I should just toss it into the trash just like you did with our relationship.” Damn, once the words were out, he wanted to reel them back in. He swore he’d keep his trajectory on business only and less than fifteen minutes later he’d lost his internal GPS. He opened his mouth to tell her to ignore that statement, but he was too late.

“You really think you’re something, don’t you?” She lost some of her composure. “The man who cheated with my best friend. I guess you would have the courage to pretend complete innocence.” Her nose wrinkled.

“Wow. You certainly know everything, don’t you?”

“I’m pretty good at math. Theresa would have gotten pregnant while you and I were still together.” Her skin paled. “Just so we’re clear, I needed you and you were distant. Now I understand why.”

He laughed. What else could he do? “Since you’re so good with math, you should be good at English too. I just got home from fighting in a war, carrying real guns—big guns—and saw death. Lots of death and destruction. I needed you too.”

Her bottom lip quivered. “Well, I guess Theresa filled in for me quite nicely.”

He ground his teeth. “You think you can waltz back into town and pretend like nothing happened?”

One corner of her mouth twisted. “Are you suggesting that I have something to feel guilty about?” Her icy laugh sent a chill through him. “That’s rich, Whiskey, seeing that you …” She didn’t finish. Instead, she exhaled slowly and some of the harsh lines disappeared from her face. “It doesn’t matter any longer. I didn’t come here to rehash the past. That’s history and so we should leave it there.” She stood and leaned on her hands on the edge of the desk. Her scent got caught in the swirl of the ceiling fan and spun around him, making him feel a little dizzy. “Here’s the deal. I can’t help the past is in the past and I won’t regurgitate it like a cat hawking up a hairball and descend into all its ugly details. Facts are facts. Let’s agree to disagree and move on. We can help each other.”

Breathing in deeply, he nodded. “Fine by me. Take the ring or toss it in the trashcan on your way out the door.” He tapped the envelope.

With a groan, she swiped it up and walked out.

She hugged the envelope to her chest and felt an internal pain. He could never understand how hard it had been to end things with him.
