Sarah and the Horses of WWI

I have a new book releasing May 22. It takes place during and immediately following World War I.

This story grabbed onto my heart and didn't let go even after I finished writing it.

Part of the reason was due research the animals who were killed during the war. Approximately eight million horses and mules died in World War I. My brain doesn’t even want to wrap around that number.

World War I required hundreds of thousands of horses and mules to pull and pack artillery, supplies, communications, medical supplies and ambulances, and engineering services, as well as to carry the cavalry. When the war began in 1914, Europe did not have enough equines to support massive armies. France, England, and Germany looked to other nations to shore up their numbers of horses, mules, and donkeys.

British and French purchasing agents and their staff came to North America in search of horses. They selected animals based on size, breed, and type from specific regions, shipping them mainly from Newport News, Virginia, and Montreal, Canada. Ships were modified with stalls and fodder storage. By the fall of 1917, more than half a million American horses and mules had been sent to Europe for service.

When the United States entered the war in 1917, a single American Army division required approximately 7,700 horses. The AEF struggled to field adequate equine power in France. Between the U-boat threats, the urgent demand for soldiers and the supplies that had to go along with them, insufficient remounts, and an equine epidemic that came in 1917, it was hard to keep up with the demand. More than 1,000 horses were cut from divisional allotments with plans to cut an additional 2,800 more by motorizing divisional artillery regiments. To supplement the number of American horses, many wild horses were rounded up from southeastern Oregon, Nevada, and northeastern California.

One article reported an estimate of 500 American horses being shipped every day and a half in the last months of the war.

The animals faced the same hardships and challenges as the troops: miserable conditions, poor food, injuries, and poisonous gas. Because there weren’t enough ships available to haul everything the Americans needed, when a choice was made between supplies for humans or animals, the humans won, of course. But it meant that there were animals that starved to death. Animals that needed medical treatment didn’t receive it due to lack of equipment, staff, or animal hospitals.

The U.S. Army Veterinary Corps was established in June 1916 with the National Defense Act. At the beginning of World War I, there were approximately 70 veterinary officers and no enlisted men. As the war progressed, the numbers grew to 2,312 officers and 16,391 enlisted personnel. In August 1918, the American Veterinary Corps officers assumed key AEF staff and command posts in the Quartermaster Corps, combat divisions, and corps. However, there was a decided lack of American animal hospitals, veterinarians, and needed supplies.

Even before the war ended, efforts were underway to commemorate the sacrifices of the animals lost during the war. Today, there are monuments to the service of the horses, mules, and donkeys of World War I to honor the critical role they played in the success of the Allies.

I chose a Kiger Mustang for the hero in my story to bond with because the horse is unique to southeastern Oregon, and Keegan would have reminded him of home. On a fun side note, a Kiger mustang stallion named Spirit was the inspiration for the DreamWorks film “Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron.”

Keegan is a combination of several horses I read about that were incredibly brave and courageous during the war, like Warrior, a thoroughbred owned by British General Jack Seely. Warrior became one of the most famous horses from World War I.

If you have plenty of tissues on hand and don’t mind a heart-wrenching story, Steven Spielberg’s War Horse is a gripping and emotional movie about one horse’s journey through World War I and the young man who loves him.

Sarah releases May 22, but you can pre-order your copy today.

She desires his heart.
He longs for her love.
Can they find common ground when he returns forever altered by the war.

In a world turned upside down by World War I, all Sarah Richards desires is to love Brett Rawlings and build a future together. After graduating high school a year early, she’s ready to dive into her dreams of college and a home filled with laughter and love. But one impulsive decision threatens all her aspirations—as well as her relationship with Brett.

As the war rages on and men head off to fight, sixteen-year-old Brett reluctantly follows his twin brother, Ben, sneaking off to France to join the American Expeditionary Forces. As the months pass, Ben thrives amidst the chaos of battle, while Brett finds himself haunted by the girl he left behind and the uncertainty of his own heart. When Ben reveals a life-altering secret, the bond between the brothers is shattered, forcing Brett to grapple with betrayal as he faces the brutal realities of war.

Brett returns home a changed man, burdened with memories too heavy to bear, yet yearning to mend the fractures of the past. Will Sarah still be waiting for him, or have time and truth forged an unbridgeable chasm between them?

Find out in this heartfelt historical romance that weaves a tale of hope, grace, forgiveness, and sweet, enduring love.

Luna Release Day!

Today is release day for my new sweet historical western romance - Luna!

Luna was such a fun story to write. When I was doing the research, I looked to old newspapers from Pendleton, Oregon, in 191, where and when the story takes place.

Among the top headlines that summer were a train robbery, Buffalo Bill's appearance at a circus that came to town, and the start of World War I.

I was able to have the hero and heroine, Hunter and Luna, on the train that is robbed. It was reportedly one of the last Wild West robberies where an old six-shooter was used.

Hunter and Luna also attend the circus and see Buffalo Bill Cody. I unearthed an old video of actual footage from some of the circus performances with him and his Wild West performers. It was so neat to watch that and imagine my characters in the crowd.

There's also a scene with a "damsel in distress" as well as Hunter keeping his real identity (it isn't a bronc buster) from Luna when they first meet.

I hope you'll give the story a try!

She’s searching for peace and grace.

He’s ready to step into his next big adventure.

Haunted by memories of the fateful day that changed her life, Luna Campanelli seeks a fresh start in Pendleton, Oregon. Life in the wild western town is nothing like she imagined, although the rugged beauty of the area soothes her troubled spirit. An unlikely friendship with one of the area ranch hands lifts her hopes, until she discovers the cowboy isn’t who he’s led her to believe.

Hunter Douglas didn’t intend to hide his identity from the woman he met on the train, but when she assumed he was his sister’s hired hand, he didn’t correct her. He never anticipated forming such a deep connection to her, especially when thoughts of her continue to infiltrate his carefully made plans. As a recent college graduate with an inheritance he intends to use to start his own ranch in Pendleton, Hunter must decide if he is willing to open his heart and include Luna in his future.

Will they embrace the unexpected love that has blossomed between them, or let fear tear them apart?

This sweet and wholesome romance is a story of love, healing, and the power of hope in a delightful western setting. Join Luna and Hunter on their journey as they discover what it truly means to love unconditionally.

Love on Target and the Pink Pistol Sisterhood

Last autumn, I was approached by a friend to be part of a project I just couldn't turn down. It involved Annie Oakley and her amazing legacy, a gun that traveled through generations, and my pals from Petticoats & Pistols.

Together, we've created a new series that is woven together by a one-of-a-kind pink-handled pistol originally gifted to Annie Oakley. The pistol comes with a legend, one promising that whoever possesses it will find true love. Annie passes the gun on to one of her students and sets the whimsical journey in motion that starts with In Her Sights by Karen Witemeyer.

The books release every ten days, beginning with Karen's story on March 30.

In Her Sights

1893 – Caldwell, Texas

Tessa James secretly loves Jackson Spivey, but trying to gain his favor only pushes him away. Since Jackson’s life revolves around guns, Tessa decides to take up shooting. Seeking lessons from famed markswoman Annie Oakley provides more than technique instruction, however. Tessa comes away with a pistol that will change the course of her life forever.

Purchase here.

My contribution to the series is Love on Target. It's book 2 and it will release on Monday, April 10.

Love on Target

1894 – Holiday, Oregon

A pistol, a mule, and a promised mining job lure Rena Burke to Oregon. She might wear trousers and work with men, but Rena secretly longs to be appreciated as a woman. Too bad the man she admires believes her to be a dangerous influence on his young daughter.

Purchase here.

We've also put together magazines that give a tip of the head to the old western magazines from the thirties and forties.

The first two magazines have been released and are filled with author interviews, recipes, games, original short stories, and excerpts from the books.

These magazines are completely free and we hope you'll enjoy them!

Vanity Sets

A while back, I asked my 91-year-old dad if there were any special gifts or memories he had from when he and my mom were dating.

He grew quiet on the other end of the phone connection for a moment or two; then he told me the year they were dating, a few months before they got engaged, he bought Mom a vanity dresser set . He described it as a white box that had a double heart on top. The inside was lined with cream silk and held a brush, comb, hand mirror, trinket jar, bottle of perfume, and nail files. We speculated about what happened to it over the years, since I have no memories of it.

I found a photo of a Lucille Ball set that was popular the same year dad purchased the one for Mom, and sent it to him. He said it looked quite similar to the one he purchased.

A few days later, Dad mentioned a little glass jar with a gold lid that Mom always kept on the dresser that was part of the set (like the jars in the above photo). The jar I remembered, and just recently Dad gave it to me.

Now, I just wish I could find the rest of the set! Or at least a photo of what it looked like.

Today, I thought I'd share a little about the history of vanity sets.

They began with a box.

From ancient times, boxes (often ornate) have been crafted to hold a variety of beautifying paraphernalia, such as jars for cosmetics and the tools to apply, flasks for perfume and oils, and mirrors.

Vanity sets were the original make-up organizers. They hit their stride in the Victorian period, remaining popular through much of the 20th century.

The sets may have changed in style and material, but never in their purpose of helping women prepare for the day ahead, and making them feel beautiful.

Vanity sets may have included the following:
  • Organizing Tray
  • Hair Receiver
  • Hair Brush
  • Hand Mirror
  • Comb
  • Perfume Atomizer
  • Manicure Set
  • Pin Box
  • Powder Puff
  • Powder Jar
  • Shoehorn
  • Button Hook

Vanity sets were crafted out of wide range of materials, from inexpensive to luxurious.

Designs may have been painted or etched into the sets.

Long-ago sets might have been made of wood. Luxury sets of ebony and ivory.

A special gift set might include monograms, or a design significant to the recipient. Personally, I would swoon if I had the above set!

Some of the other materials used over the years included silver, enamel, porcelain, depression glass, pewter, celluloid, Bakelite, tortoise shell, brass, crystal, and plastic.

When I was in high school, my mom gave me a three-piece set much like the one pictured above. The head of the brush could be removed for easy cleaning.

Sadly, after college and several moves, I have no idea what I did with that set, but I'd sure love to have back.

What about you? Did you ever have a vanity set? Or remember seeing one on your mom and grandmother's dresser?

I mention a vanity set in my new release Henley.  Read about hers (and her sweet love story) today!

Today, I thought you might enjoy a look at the hero in the book.

Doctor Evan Holt  made a few brief appearances in Holiday Hope. But we don't know much about him, other than he's young and single. When I was kicking around ideas for Henley, like where the story should take place and who should be involved in it, it didn't take long to decide on my fictional town of Holiday as the perfect setting, and Evan as the perfect character to be Henley's love interest.

Evan thinks he's far too busy with his growing practice to have time for courting or relationships. But he does make time to return to his childhood home for his sister's wedding. And the train-ride home just happens to be how he meets Miss Henley Jones.

Here is Evan's introduction to the story:

“Enough! No more suffocating hugs, and definitely no more kisses. Your lips should be thoroughly chapped by now, so please cease slobbering on me.” Evan Holt laughed as his mother pulled his head down and noisily smooched his cheek three more times before she finally released her hold on him and took a step back. A mingling of tears and mirth glistened in her bright green eyes in a shade so similar to his own.

“Don’t begrudge me a little love, my wandering son. I’m just so glad to have you home, even if you’ll only be in Pennsylvania for a week,” his mother said, patting his arm as though she had to keep touching him to make certain he was real.

“It’s good to be here, Mam,” Evan said, grinning at her before he settled his arm around the shoulders of his youngest sister, Keeva. He’d barely set foot off the train in Altoona, before what appeared to be his entire family swarmed him, offering hugs, and slaps on the back. He’d been kissed by every female that had made the trip to the depot to welcome him, from his eighty-year-old grandmother to his six-month-old niece he’d been so pleased to finally meet.

“I think you’ve gotten even more handsome since you were here two years ago,” Keeva said, grinning up at him with the unveiled admiration of a sixteen-year-old. Although he was eleven years older than the baby of the family, he and Keeva had always been close. Perhaps it was because they were the most alike of the seven Holt siblings.

He glanced around at the unmistakable red hair of his brothers and sisters, inherited from Eira Walsh Holt, their effervescent mother. She had moved to Altoona with her family when she was nineteen. Her father and brothers acquired jobs on the railroad, building the famed Horseshoe Curve three-track railroad that helped advance westward travel.

Evan never tired of hearing the story of how his parents met. His father, Hiram Holt, was a young farmer and had just purchased several piglets that came in on railway car. He was loading them in his wagon when one escaped. Eira caught it and carried it over to him. It had been love at first glance, and they’d wed a month later.

Now, his parents had seven children, nine grandchildren, and were about to gain another son-in-law when his sister Fianna married her sweetheart Saturday afternoon. Evan had timed his arrival so he’d have a full week to spend with his family before he boarded the train and returned to his home in Holiday, Oregon, where he’d opened a medical practice three years ago.

Love is a gamble, and heartbreak is a risk she’s willing to take.

Despite her dreams to set down roots, Henley Jones has never had a place to call home. She’s spent her life on riverboats and railroad cars, tagging along with her gambling father. A shoot-out during a card game results in his death, leaving Henley alone and nearly penniless. Out of luck and options, Henley agrees to travel across the country to the newly established town of Holiday, Oregon to marry a stranger.

A demanding practice in a town clawing its way to respectability keeps Doctor Evan Holt rushing at a hectic pace. He’s far too busy to see to pressing matters like hiring competent help, or finding a wife. When one of his patients orders a mail-order bride, Evan can’t decide if the man is crazy or brilliant.  From the moment he meets her, Evan battles an unreasonable attraction to the beautiful, charming woman who seems to be hiding something from her past.

In a town flush with possibilities, will taking a chance on love end with heartache or a winning hand?

Find out in this sweet western romance full of the humor, hope, and love.

Henley is part of the Love Train sweet romance series and releases April 15. Look for more books set in Holiday in the heartwarming and wholesome Holiday Express  and Holiday Brides series.

Counting down to Valentine's Day with 3 Free eBooks

Counting Down to Valentine's Day with 3 Free eBooks on Feb 11 to 15

By Jacqui Nelson

Valentine's Day is only one day but writing a series can take years in an author's life—and in their characters' lives as well.

Book 1 in my Lonesome Hearts series was the first book I wrote. It took years to write and revise and polish. The other four books in the series each took less than six months to write.

Crossing the Oregon Trail (the setting for book 1 in my Lonesome Hearts series) could take four to five months.

If one was lucky enough to survive that journey, then one's life might change in a single day on horseback (the premise for book 2 in my Lonesome Hearts series).

If one was lucky enough to (at the end of that ride) find a forever family and (over the years following) grow strong and brave, then one might save the life of their soulmate during two very challenging days on a remote mountain (the premise for book 3 in my Lonesome Hearts series).

Counting Down to Valentine's Day—with 3 Free eBooks

My Story Inspiration for Robyn a Christmas Bride

My Story Inspiration

By Jacqui Nelson

The spirit of gift-giving is an inspiration and as an author, I love pondering what inspires people and what might inspire my characters.

When writing my second Christmas story, I asked myself...how can a gift be so special that it inspires the transformation of a relationship and launches a grand love affair? Words like priceless and selfless sprang to mind and became part of not only my story, Robyn: A Christmas Bride, but its Story Inspiration page (a page I've included in the back of all of my books). Here's that page...

Robyn A Christmas Bride book cover

ROBYN: A CHRISTMAS BRIDE

Story Inspiration page ~ from the back of the book

When I started pondering a plot for my Christmas story, my first question was, what should the theme be? Is there a classic Christmas tale with an uplifting theme that many people might recognize or at least relate to? The Gift of the Magi became my first inspiration when writing Robyn: A Christmas Bride.

The Gift of the Magi (written by O. Henry and published in 1905) features the themes of selfless gift-giving and how the gift of love is priceless. In that story, a husband and wife each sell their most valuable possession, but they are items that can be grown again (hair) or can be bought back again (a watch). I wondered what if the thing you valued most was sustaining a way of life that you’d struggled a long time to create and that now defined your entire self-worth? Could you give that up if it meant ensuring the happiness of a loved one? That might be the ultimate selfless gift to give.

My next thought was having a heroine who was a trouser-wearing tomboy who loved driving wagons in 1877, a time when society wasn’t very accommodating about women’s appearances and occupations that strayed from the norm. So…what if my heroine decided she needed to do something drastic to win the heart of the man she loved? Changing yourself to please another person (even if they haven’t asked you to) might be considered another selfless gift. So…what is a classic transformation story? My Fair Lady and its heroine Eliza Doolittle were my next inspiration.

My Fair Lady (released in 1964 as a movie starring Audrey Hepburn) focuses on speech lessons, but Eliza’s transform also includes her appearance—her clothing, hair, the way she carries herself, and more. It’s a life-changing transformation that is difficult for Eliza and takes hard work and sacrifice—for her own good (a chance at better job prospects) but also, as time goes on, to please her instructors.

So…selfless giving and self-sacrifice. Ready. Set. Go. Write a Christmas story.

I hope you enjoyed Robyn: A Christmas Bride as much as I enjoyed not only writing the story but also giving Robyn Llewellyn and Max Peregrine their hard-won and well-deserved Christmas gifts.

Hello Robyn

ROBYN: A CHRISTMAS BRIDE

Noelle, Colorado –  Christmas 1877

Who’s the perfect match for a flame-haired Welsh tomboy who loves driving wagons?

by three free-spirited older brothers, Robyn Llewellyn has learned to fight for what she wants—and now she wants to transform her boss and best friend, Max Peregrine, into a lifelong partner. Determined to become the image of what a marriage-minded man wants, Robyn trades her trousers for a dress and heads to Max’s hometown of Noelle, Colorado. But changing who she is with the help of the now happily married Brides of Noelle puts her friendship with Max at risk.

Who’s the perfect match for a work-addicted Denver business owner who loves his independence?

Defying his brother and grandpa’s wishes for him to stay with them in Noelle, Max Peregrine has created his dream job—leading a highly successful branch of Peregrines’ Post and Freight while working beside Robyn, the only person who makes him smile every day. But when she leaves without a word, Max follows her to Noelle where the choices they both must face could make it impossible for them to stay together beyond Christmas Day.

Inspired by My Fair Lady, The Gift of the Magi, and the spirit of gift-giving, Robyn: A Christmas Bride is a classic Western historical love story set in a small town high in the mountains during Christmas 1877.
